February 14, 2012 at 2:34 pm #1249316I recently learnt that in the late 19th/early 20th century a Scotsman either invented the bicycle or made existing ones way faster. He then promptly crashed it in Glasgow and got put up before the fiscal and fined about 20 shillings for dangerous riding…
If you are near Edinburgh then the Edinburgh Bicycle Co-Op is a good place to get bikes and associated kit from. I get my cycling jackets from there as I thought that if Scottish people use them when riding in winter they will be good for all UK weather :laugh_at:

Quote:Further innovations increased comfort and ushered in a second bicycle craze, the 1890s’ Golden Age of Bicycles. In 1888, Scotsman John Boyd Dunlop introduced the first practical pneumatic tire, which soon became universal. Soon after, the rear freewheel was developed, enabling the rider to coast. This refinement led to the 1890s invention[17] of coaster brakes. Derailleur gears and hand-operated cable-pull brakes were also developed during these years, but were only slowly adopted by casual riders. By the turn of the century, cycling clubs flourished on both sides of the Atlantic, and touring and racing became widely popular.February 16, 2012 at 2:31 pm #1249320@!sinner69! 468262 wrote:
