I had to type a letter for the MD. It was about one of the managers wanting to foster a child…..
This was one of the things the MD wrote..
” His commitment to the company during this period has been good and he is generally reliable. “
Generally reliable – that doesn’t sound right!! The wording for something like this can be extremely important.
The letter needs to go out today and my MD is now left of office with his mobile off. So should I accidentally replace generally with extremely and then forge his signature?
The forging the signature bit is putting me off..
Do you think this one letter would hinder the guys chances of fostering?
November 26, 2010 at 2:06 pm #1231819I’d just put “he is reliable” and leave out any words which create ambiguity.
I don’t know how fostering kids works but will they not accept a “PP” signed letter? we do them for references all the time and its a healthcare company where rules are stright.
November 26, 2010 at 3:57 pm #1231822I would type the letter as he wrote it. doesn’t sound wrong to me. do you normally edit the MD’s letters?
November 26, 2010 at 4:09 pm #1231821No I never edit his letters. The post has gone now. I didn’t change anything. I just thought the MD was being careless.
I hope this doesn’t cause problems for the guy wanting to foster 🙁

better to make an honest copy than to lie. I see no reason to think the words are not accurate.
November 26, 2010 at 5:09 pm #1231818AnonymousHi Lt Luna ,
One of the lads at work and his missus fostered a child , it took a very long time . Im sure the letter will be good enough and theres many other checks they do so i doubt that this one letter will do him any damage . Dont worry LT Luna you did what you had to do and didnt do anything wrong so dont feel guilty about it 🙂Regards
MungoNovember 27, 2010 at 5:24 am #1231820exactly what GL said … don’t add in anything you don’t need. be direct and to the point. Don’t say things like ” he’s on the whole a good worker” … just say “he’s a good worker” .. etc.
Also it’s the MD’s problem if he leaves it too late … the guy trying to foster will hopefully get some lee way (and don’t forget the people reciving the letter will not be working on the weekend either most likely!)
If you change the letter and forge his signiture you could get done for fraud! … if you change it and he signs it after it’s fine. Alltho I’d get his permission to change it or it could still come back on you in your work place.
