Who do u think the 358 guests are. Why don’t they sign up and join in?
Am I being paranoid or could some of them be police doing their research before trying to spoil our fun at the weekend?

March 1, 2007 at 3:36 pm #1100581I check the users online IPs fairly regularly for this very purpose…
most guests are legit, many are from countries where language barriers and worries over monitoring dissuade people from registering.
but the bulk of the guests are “robots” that are from search engines. These ensure that our threads can be found on google and other portals/search engines.
we do get the occasional bit of monitoring from various government and law enforcement agencies worldwide but thats to be expected given that this site often discusses controversial activities in a legal grey area. There’s nothing stopping cops using normal “home” internet connections which is what many do as some forums tried blocking out access from obvious police gateways..
Users should always treat this board – or any other public webspace such as other forums, myspace, blogs etc as a public resource that anyone can read and glean info from, whether they contribute or not.

March 1, 2007 at 4:30 pm #1100584March 1, 2007 at 6:23 pm #1100589Can you use an IP to track down a name and address for someone?
And how easy would it be for the police to get hold of the IPs of PartyVibe users? I suppose they would have to have PV’s permission or a warrant to snatch your servers.
That little Danasoft mouse is making me nervous… what else can people see if they know how to look?
I remember seeing on the news a few years back that someone got busted because of his profile on Friends Reunited. He probably deserved it though coz he put Drug Dealer in as his occupation.

Of course cops can get a Court order to get more info from ISPs that can trace people to home, work or school addresses, and this has been done to locate cyber-bullies and hackers who have tried to destroy peoples commercial businesses.
In most cases ISPs will co-operate with cops provided the correct paperwork has been submitted.

Realistically though, if people simply accept the fact that there are cops around on the net just like anywhere else and aren’t stupid about what they discuss online (such as bragging about obviously criminal acts) there is very little they can get in trouble for on here or any other website.
Look at it this way – if someone walks into a pub full of randoms and says they have 500 pills or had stabbed an enemy and dumped their body in the river, there is a chance they could get overheard and nicked because of what they said. The net is now no different…
