June 5, 2006 at 2:59 pm #1077992On that subject, I sometimes get these detachment from reality moments where I can look at certain ergonomically designed objects as if i’m looking through the eyes of an alien and then I wonder how different things would look if we were totally different.

June 7, 2006 at 8:00 am #1078004since all colour naming is learned by people pointing at them when we are kids, i move that there is no guarantee that we all see the same thing and call it red:crazy_fre
what i can guarantee is that we all call specific things particular names because that is what we were taught they were; pretty much like most of the things we know that we did not learn on our own – they are just what we were taught by people who were taught by others:you_smart
this applies to colour naming, cultural behaviours, rascism, attitudes to life, etc in fact all knowledge is acquired like this
so next time you say i do/dont like something stop and think ‘do i like/not like it’ or is it just something i was taught? the answer can be very liberating

We do know for sure, because we have the technology to determine light frequencies of individual colours, that large numbers of people do see the same colour.

June 7, 2006 at 3:32 pm #1077994some colour definitions are agreed by common consenus and even international standards (particularly when they represent safety critical identifiers like traffic signals, electric cable colour codes etc).
Others do have differences between cultures and individuals definitiions
Wikipedia has a massive article about this. It is long and complicated but there are some cool computer generated pictures as well 🙂

How do you know that fish don’t need glasses? That’s probably why they all swim in schools, the fish-geezer at the front is the only one who can actually see where he is going, the rest are just following him as they can’t see any further ahead!
