I HATE those two main clubs (Fire & Ice/Liquid), their just cattle markets. Where are they any decent places to drink without too many knob heads? I know a few bars but their a bit more up market and they are ok to drink it but I’d prefer somewhere that’s good for a laugh with no hassle.
I went to the White Horse on Saturday which was Drum & Bass in one room and Trance in another (up stairs) but there wasn’t many people there yet still a good atmosphere and made a change from the normal wanky bars/clubs where people stare at you all night while necking more alcohol than a brewery can produce.

April 1, 2008 at 11:47 am #1159425silver star can be OK but they’re concentrating more on Drum and Bass and cramming a younger and more aggressive crowd into a small space, with the inevitable problems this causes
One problem here is that Suffolk adhere to the Metropolitan Police’s “Clubs and Vice Unit’s” “Safe and Sound” protocol for licensing any dance music event despite us being 70 miles away from London…
The Zest murders and the prostitute killings (with both the victims and suspects having links with East Anglian nightlife) just reinforced the prejudices the cops and normal society already have over any sort of nightlife, so all that gets endured is the binge drinking culture (and even that is being slowly locked down)

May 4, 2013 at 11:02 am #1159426an update : White horse hotel (a fascinating place inside, so its a shame this has happened) had EDM events stopped in about 2009(?) following mismanagement by the young managers and the London based owners sold / rented it it for retail use part of it is now a starbucks
Silver Star was locked off, closed, reopened as a social club for the Polish community and has reopened again as the Buccaneers but only does guitar based events at present (though they are supposed to be OK if you are into that sort of music)
Tates is currently the only town centre venue doing EDM events, usually drum and bass, UKG and similar more “urban tinged” genres. Sometimes Disruption do events at the Malthouse (good to see they are still doing stuff). TBH I do not particularly enjoy going to town centre events (I feel a bit “old and out of place” at them and you are intermingling with too many loud pissheads, if I am going to drink I would rather to to a real ale pub and do it properly ). If anyone reading here is younger and still desparate that they “must go out” at a weekend then these venues are maybe worth considering. I at least know the promoters are good people.
Ironically where Binge moved to was my old town (Reading) and events there have been equally restricted….

Ipswich Three Buccaneers summary from Suffolk Camrado well Nigel and friends for keeping that link bang up to date! But it would have to be better music yet to get me through the doors if the beer is only manufactured lager :yakk:

Hmm i’m not sure GL. I don’t know about the majority of the nights but I know there are at least some decent ones held in the smaller venues by local soundsystems, but its mostly restricted to DnB/Jungle..

May 4, 2013 at 1:13 pm #1159428can only go by what my mate KDW said as not been there for ages but its always been those genres more popular in Reading. I did notice some old friends had switched to doing Reggae / bashment nights but they might play those genres as well..

May 4, 2013 at 2:22 pm #1159431I agree Tates is really the only venue worth going to IMO, a local system (i think it was Undetected) did a night there a month or so ago which from what i heard was a good laugh.
And as GL said Disruption do some legals at The Malthouse
