June 20, 2006 at 10:21 pm #1079829I’ve been quite lazy actually. Had a cold so I’ve just been chilling out. About the only activity I’ve gotten up to is walking a few places and trying to fix something complicated on my bike and messing it up even more.

I was especially pissed off because I had a meeting that I was supposed to attend that was quite important. I tried to force myself to go but I ended up shivering under 3 layers of covers in my clothes!
Thing is, I left my emlpoyment a month ago and have pretty much been enjoying doing very little for a short period. The one important thing that I needed to get to I ended up having a cold/flu. :get_you:
June 20, 2006 at 10:37 pm #1079834I’m just back from Barcelona…then we did the birthday party for the site I’m staying on, and now I’m making some very dodgy folktekcore or whatever you want to call it when you take random peices of folk music and give them a techno makeover for my liveset.

what were you trying to fix on your bike?
did you sort it out in the end?

I fitted a new chain but for some reason it was catching against the front mech despite being no wider than the last. I thought after the last chain came off it might have twisted the chasis of the shifter.
On closer inspection I found the cable to be a little worn which I think has removed some of the tension hence shifting the mech to the right a little.
Tried to add some tension and reposition the mech, which was more of a nightmare than I thought it was going to be. After fiddling and trying to get the right tension and position for bloody ages I snapped the cable. Probably for the best as about 2 inches of the end had frayed.
After checking the chain I think I’ve taken out one too many links like a prat and will need another new one as refitting a link is bloody tricky and not really advisable. So now I need a new chain and new front shifter cable.

(as mentioned on another thread) maybe next time eh? there’s usually quite a bit of stuff happening there anyway.

bit of a nightmare…
probably a bit late now or maybe not but
has loads of useful info on bike repairs
also the shimano website (eventually) leads you to all the tech info about the parts and how the fiddly little bits fit together (assuming you can remember the model numbers or they are still visible and that all the bits are shimano)
and if you sign up to usenet group uk.rec.cycling (using NNTP protocol on outlook express and newsserver news.btopenworld.com there are a helpful bunch of people on there…
I’d lend you one of my books about bicycle repair but half my personal library is still in Reading 🙁
June 20, 2006 at 11:45 pm #1079832Cheers dude, I’ll check all that out. Although it drives me nuts sometimes, I enjoy fiddling around with the bike rather than take it in to a repair shop.
I caved in when it came to fitting the cassette though and took it to a professional.

Thank you. I am sure I will have a good time. I intend getting a Collins English/Portuguese dictionary, and possibly another small book to help with sentence structure. I’ll also get a chance to improve my extremely rusty French, as it is the long drive down, but I will also enjoy that (I think) since I enjoy driving usually.
PS does anyone know if the cost of living is cheap there? I was wondering whether to take most of my food with me or buy it over there.

Good idea. I’ll visit this afternoon, and try to get one. Cheers.
