February 14, 2014 at 5:19 pm #1162772this track might not be as well known as others by Madness, it was from 1985 when there was all sorts of stuff going on in the UK and the Cold War was at its height
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kepB5CVUVc
The Government have announced
That London Bridge is to be closed
Under the full moon of May the third
All the lighthouses and seaside roads
No, I never, I never read in the newsCome on, tell me whos this for
Lighting the questions and
Burning the boats one by one
Burning the boats one by oneTap tap tap, birds that sing
Telephone calls that do not ring
One, two, three, whats the time?
Whos that hanging off my line?
this bit was about all the surveillance and other secret govt stuff, a call which did not ring sometimes meant a “infinity bug” was in the phone and it was being used to relay the audio from the room. Although this sort of bug wasn’t that common (the components required were not cheap back then) and more often put there by private investigators from newspapers and companies (who would obtain BT uniforms and equipment) than the government.
123 is the speaking clock number – that circuit was used for this during much of the 1980s and some of the 1990s – it would be used to set off the sirens for warning of nuclear attack. Many anti nuclear organisations sort of knew it was there but weren’t 100% sure what the equipment was for and thought it was for surveillance. Today we now have broadband using an updated version of this technology, you can still call 123 but its expensive and a VOIP telephone will make it inaccurate anyway…
The main source of the National Nuclear Attack Warning would be Air Defence Operations Centre ( ADOC ) at Strike Command in RAF High Wycombe with a back up at the Preston U.K.W.M.O. Sector Headquarters, located at Langley Lane, Goosnargh, Lancs. This table mounted unit would be used to issue the message to the 250 Carrier Control Points (CCP).
The operator would turn the safety interlock key switch.
Press the large Red operate switch.
The speaking clock would be removed from all the national distribution rings.
A one second burst of two simultaneous tones of 1200Hz and 1440Hz known as P+Q tones would be sent to sound the incoming message alarm in the CCP.
When the “Speak Now” light illuminated the operator would announce the message into the dual microphones. This would be conveyed to the injection exchange for distribution on all four of the speaking clock rings.I know that nothing last forever
And Im just waiting for the sun to set
Blowing dust from my loud hailer
On the roofCome on, tell me whos this for
Lighting the questions and
Burning the boats one by one
Burning the boats one by one
Burning the boats one by oneThe Ministry of Co-operation
Washed and hanging on the line
Theres a million burning questions
To set the Thames alightNow Ive joined an exclusive club
Just by being more than poor
Saw the Deputy Chairman
On the floorCome on, tell me whos this for
Lighting the questions and
Burning the boats one by one
