April 24, 2006 at 12:34 pm #1071584looks like they are having DNS probs – try this one
cut the admins some slack, moving boards across servers is never smooth or easy (took us about a week as well when we did it recently)
April 24, 2006 at 12:40 pm #1071602What’s DNS mean?
April 24, 2006 at 12:46 pm #1071600Pisces wrote:What’s DNS mean?Short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server), an Internet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they’re easier to remember. The internet however, is really based on IP’s. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS Service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name http://www.example.com might translate to 198.105.232.4
April 24, 2006 at 12:48 pm #1071585DNS Domain Name Server.
computers on the Internet have an IP address made up of 4 numbers
but humans find it easier to remember words and IP addresses can change for a variety of reasons.
when you type in http://www.partyvibe.com or http://www.squatjuice.com in your browser, your computer contacts the DNS your internet provider has and gets back the IP address number and connects to the site.
Normally you don’t see this happening and because of DNS you don’t have to remember loads of numbers to get on the Internet.
Thats as simple as I can make the explanation (and TBH even after 15 years on the Internet I still don’t know exactly how DNS works, I just know that the ISPs make it work and it is a Very Bad Thing when it fucks up)
April 24, 2006 at 12:49 pm #1071615Anonymousyea, infexious was down for a bit when we changed over aswell. must be the ‘in’ think to do at the moment

the SJ server has been slow today but its there.
and yes you can sometimes get through workplace filters by using dotted ip addresses (the numbers) as URLs but some IT departments have checks for these and there are new filters which judge message boards on actual content rather than just a blacklist of URLs.
I used to work in a place where this site (partyvibe) was let through, but threads which contained too much swearing or slang terms for sex were blocked..
April 24, 2006 at 4:29 pm #1071609We moved the virtual machine it’s currently running on to a faster host, because of the load SJ put on the system… Hence the DNS swapover.
We’ll be online soon with some dedicated hardware… I sense more threads like this in the offing when we switch over once more. D’oh!
April 24, 2006 at 7:10 pm #1071580What provider have you gone with?
April 25, 2006 at 10:09 am #1071610It looks like we’re chucking a 1U box in with these guys: http://www.49pence.com

Very nice indeed, although I’d have reservations about the lack of support. Partyvibe was hosted that way for many years and outages can be a problem…
