just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse..
OK I’ve got no problem with what the cops are doing here.
A man is missing in a foreign country and local cops and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office are working with the Police in that country to try and work out what happened – that is the usual procedure.
but it has also shown up the dark side of parties in Thailand (an Indian was killed in a knifing at the same event), created worldwide bad publicity for raves – and could eventually even result in British cops acting as “mentors” and “consultants” to the Thailand constabulary to help clamp down on their party scene as well (they can claim both nations win by stopping an event linked with drug use and crime)
Oh, and cops (and even some civil servants!) in Thailand have real guns and aren’t afraid to use them. During the last drugs clampdown it seemed that the govt even handed out guns to the desk-bound Civil Servants – said “you go in with the Police and deal with this problem!” They then went to all the poor areas and shot dead at least 1000 people they “suspected” of being involed with drugs – without any trial.
April 20, 2008 at 7:35 am #1160945Poor guy… I feel really sorry for his family who might never know what happened.
:hopeless:

April 20, 2008 at 1:15 pm #1160942Yep. There’s a facebook group about him as well. Telling everyone who goes to Thailand to watch out for him.
Sadly there’s 100s of people who just disappear all the time. didn’t it happen to a drummer of some band a while ago?

April 20, 2008 at 5:54 pm #1160947well tbh full moon party has become so massive and comercialised but still remains relatively unregulated.
really not surprised it has attraced some darker typesApril 20, 2008 at 5:54 pm #1218813well tbh full moon party has become so massive and comercialised but still remains relatively unregulated.

really not surprised it has attraced some darker typesexactly. And now some ambitious copper from Norfolk may well pipe up and say “we had the same problem in our country, would your officers like assistance in dealing with it?”
these days it doesn’t even mean a “free holiday” for the cops, it can all be done over emails and internet messages (including video of tactics) and will still have an effect
I wouldn’t want to be at a full moon party when the Royal Thai Police decide to move in…

Doesn’t Thialand have like… death penalty for drugs too? That’s gonna be some wrong shit if that happened.
Hope it doesn’t happen before I get out there.

If you do ever go to these countries its best staying away from drugs there – as a white British backpacker/ low budget tourist you will be number 1 on the profiles.
Think of the hassles a muslim or Asian chap gets as a new immigrant in this country, this time you are the immigrant..
if its bad today its likely to be 3 times worse in a few years time.
The reason those in power in SE Asia hate drugs so much isn’t because of the substances themselves, but the opium trade was forced on many nations by the British and tolerance of opium was used to “dumb down” natives and stop them rebelling. The way things are going it looks like this won’t be forgotten or forgiven in our lifetimes..

April 21, 2008 at 5:36 pm #1160946Yep its true … i was on the island Ko Samui and the police were randomly searching groups of backpackers sitting on the beach…(The bars open out to the beach….) I had a bag full of mushrooms and very quiety left to go back to my bungalow leaving my partner who was up dancing about, he managed to figure it out where I had gone…I was absolutly kacking it.
They were full on searching too… bags pockets, lifting up towels, emptying shoes….

April 21, 2008 at 9:22 pm #1160937AnonymousWas over there a couple of years ago and had great time… well except for the mushy juice, yeuk…
We stayed round the Phuket area and had no problems with anything, we would go to beaches and see boards advertising full moon parties and signs saying mushroom drinks or whatever,
We got stopped by the tight browns once coming back from a party but we reckoned the cops were bored and into chatting us up.
If i had to analyse the legal situation over there I would say that the country lives in a state of impending conflict, Burma military incursions, the coup, major heroin problem in the north,
Harsh life too for a lot of folks crap wages hard work, yeah! draconian ways of dealing with problems, I made some nice friends over there and tried to follow their advice and examples
And i guess that’s what i would recommend to anyone going over, get to know peeps and take their advice on where to go and what to buy, we avoided the big parties and the tourist traps in Patong and tried to explore and find our own Thailand…

exactly.
I can’t blame the Thais for being angry as despite never getting colonised by the West they are now facing the reality that the lucky ones will end up as cheap labour to make hard drives and other electronics for companies based in Singapore and Malaysia (and Singapore is trying to colonise them by the market!)
To many of them the commercial western events such as full moon parties are just seen as a social problem which harms both locals and foreigners.
I would never attend one out of principle, same way as i boycott badly run parties in England.
Incidentally they have had an election and voted in a centre right candidate from a party founded by a former copper.

Yeah! agree don’t think its a good country to go to with intention of just partying, but worth it if you want to see beautiful stuff and your interested in how other peeps live, its more like a whole experience in itself, like the beaches and the wats? oh yeah and if you want to see western tourism at its worst… but go meet the people that was the best bit for me…
ps. can i upload pics to here if i can will put some up of stuff from Thailand…

April 21, 2008 at 10:05 pm #1160943i think it goes without saying that there is some serious police corruption in thailand
i hope this guy turns up, but it seems unlikely. i vaguely knew a german bloke when i lived out there who disappeared off the beach one night while police where around. it was a small island and he had been there for months, quite settled. he wouldn’t have just upped and left for no reason, but the cops denied having him in jail or anything. :hopeless:
on another note, it’s such a beautiful country with such a rich culture that i think it’s a waste to travel all that way to do what you could do here any day of the week
