a “region” is often defined differently according to the views of
– the Royal Mail
– the Ministry of Of Defence (Ordnance Survey)
– the wider public sector
– the BBC and commercial media (both have different boundaries)
– peoples own individual perceptionsand everyone has different ideas… (actually Bucks, Beds and Herts are a sort of “no mans land” which is “neither SE England nor East Anglia” – but Bucks is SE whilst Beds, Herts are East)
It really is no mans land, i recieve central news my friend down the road recieves east anglia and another one recieves themes valley.
Weird, lol.

Oxfordshire is South East as well… (within this region Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire are seen as a “sub-region”
The Government has changed the boundaries several times in the last last 30 years or so, particularly in SE England. Where I used to live in Reading was in Oxfordshire for many years and then in Berkshire, then Berkshire County Council got abolished as an active council (but still exists as a county!)
TV regions aren’t very accurate due to signal overlaps (wireless comms has no borders!) and commercial as well as political pressures (in fact ITV is trying downsize the regions to save money). Those too have been reorganised, Meridian and Central South is now ITV Thames Valley and Central East/West has been merged back to Birmingham as the regional studios have been closed.

September 26, 2007 at 10:07 pm #1120610i’m a bit surpised by the stats (ok lies, damned lies and . . .) but i always felt that the South East (that includes the south and the east, sorry but that just tickled me) and the north (again 😉 ) outwieghed the Southwest by far
Pleasantly surprised that there’s a few southwesterners here as well as me :weee:
