anyone experiencing thundery weather/storms yet?
seen reports about storms/flash floods in Northants and Beds
at 22:20 here in Ipswich currently hot and humid; no sign of rain…
stick your weather reports on this thread if it is safe to do so (i.e you don’t have overhead telephone or electric cables feeding your house!)
apparently people in Beds were calling 999 because their electric went out (WTF do they expect, the cops to go and arrest the weather?)
July 4, 2006 at 9:35 pm #1081064Anonymousjust had some nice refreshing showers over in surrey, its oppressively hot like a woolen blanket in a microwave. i could do with a thunderstorm. the air is charged to fuck.
July 5, 2006 at 1:43 am #1081071Well apparently we are getting thunder storms today, in my area. but i really hope not cause that will put my work off and i really need it!!
July 5, 2006 at 3:19 am #1081082Well i’m not from the UK

July 5, 2006 at 4:00 am #1081050There’s none here so far but they’re on their way…
July 5, 2006 at 6:58 am #1081081come over pretty black where i live, big thunder clashes too, no lightening yet though
July 5, 2006 at 7:37 am #1081090its unbeliveably foggy here in newcastle, round the coast anyway, wouldnt mind seein that firey ball in the sky again.
July 5, 2006 at 7:41 am #1081083there was some hardcore lightning in cambs yesterday afternoon, and supposedly more today
July 5, 2006 at 7:44 am #1081074we had some a few days back but it did nothing to clear the air; its like walking through soup just now
bring on the proper thunderstorm with forked lightning raaaraaa mind you i will unplug all the electrics if we get it…past experience is that we could lose all our tel/comp equipment again…
July 5, 2006 at 8:05 am #1081091been some Thunder and lightening here for a couple of days now.Though its more sporadic now, seems like it peaked Friday Evening.
July 5, 2006 at 8:32 am #1081087No thunderstorms as yet in Lincolnshire.
We could do with them tho, its really muggy!
I love thunderstorms-watching them is kinda hypnotic i think!
July 5, 2006 at 8:43 am #1081067It’s playing make your mind up round here, took washing in and hid the mower away @ 7 coz it was threatening, gone all sunny now 🙂
July 5, 2006 at 10:23 am #1081072Its proper misty here now an there’s occasional spurts of rain. Did get woken up by a few thunder claps, but thats been about it. No lightning for oxfordshire so far.
July 5, 2006 at 11:21 am #1081059Proper storm in the SE yesterday @ 2pm for an hour or so. Loads of thunder & lightning. Also hail. The hail was still on the ground this morning when i cycled to work in places. Lots of leaves and branches on the floor everywhere. Certain areas of road with poor drainage were well flooded.
I love a good storm :weee:
July 5, 2006 at 11:49 am #108105112:46 – still calm in Ipswich… saw EDF vans with gensets attached though driving around “just in case” (or being deployed elsewhere in the region)
I don’t mind the storm but I don’t want it trashing the telecoms or electric infrastructure where I work; small businesses cannot easily afford this sort of disruption…

i assume you have surge protection but if you are so worried could you unplug or isolate any of it? seems to be the only sure fire way?

I also have a shelf full of backup equipment and we have a second site down the road…
My greater concern is more that if/when anything goes down it is repaired only at the timescales of the large corporates; who have competing demands on their resources from larger customers with more clout and are not particularly bothered if you are without service for a few days; they will pay you compensation on service charges but nothing for the full cost such as loss of business..
It took BT 3 weeks to get our site move sorted – they are still poking about in cabinets etc down the road because it seems to have created a problem for someone else and there is a shortage of engineers anyway.. its a minimum 2 days turnaround for line faults here..
And the electric here is on open bare 400V overhead wires whilst elsewhere in the village its on insulated conductors; the whole lot is ancient!
July 5, 2006 at 12:27 pm #1081068norwich – was raining when left for work at halh 8 this morning, now it is over cast and very very muggy no sign of any storms tho( i love a good storm)

sounds like here :groucho:
we lose power so often that i dont bother reporting power failures unless they last more than 30 mins:crazy_fre:crazy_fre:crazy_fre
and we shant sully the thread by discussing the state of the local tel exchanges…

July 5, 2006 at 3:16 pm #108105416:00 – Ipswich, Suffolk still clear but very hot+humid
It will probably start pissing down round here the moment I am on my way home…
As for power cuts waiting about 30 mins makes sense as many faults related to the 11kv/33kv high voltage lines auto-clear these days (and there are gadgets built into the network which alert the electric company when things go pear-shaped); but when its the low-voltage (230V/400V) bit they do depend on you to tell them your lights are out!
July 5, 2006 at 3:21 pm #1081085fukin heavy rain fallin on cambridge,
