how was it? I done my back in last week hauling computers/desks etc single handed whilst cable monkeying and have been doing 12 hour days so couldn’t make it unfortunately
I did hear about the men in black acting like muppets again though..
January 15, 2008 at 12:09 am #1152026As far as numbers go it was a good night and most people seemed to really enjoy themselves. The security were pretty tight and were chucking people out left right and centre though. Good mix of music between the two rooms and generally pretty safe people.
On a more personal note, I was tired from working all day then leaving work with 1hr spare before going to Bury to set up. I’ve also done my back in somehow and it was giving me a really bad headache all night (from the tension). Plus I’d forgotten how low the ceilings were so it was impossible to get the rig sounding good more than 10 ppl deep due to the cancellation of the mid-high. Kept getting hassled to turn it down off the management and having to battle against gain happy dj’s trying to turn it up to compensate…… sounding a bit negative here, but I generally enjoyed the night. I think I would have liked it more if i didn’t have to worry about soundsystem.
There are a few pics on Dontstayin if you go to the Bury St Ed bit.

TBH I was also a bit paranoid about getting ID’d even though I’ve been there a few times before, I should get one of them citizencards but I disagree with the concept of having to have one (after all that woman at bluenotes wanted to ID me :laugh_at:)

heard about girls being chucked out and left to find their own way back which is IMO outrageous given the risks to their safety in most towns.
there has got to be another venue in suffolk,I can’t fucking believe a county this large has no suitable venues, its like we live in fucking 1600s still like puritans run everything..

January 15, 2008 at 10:36 am #1152024probably for being seen doing drugs or just “looking” a bit too mashed
there’s loads of background to this..
in December some dealer sold a shit mcpp pill to a coppers son who got very ill and then grassed up to his dad.
Suffolk police have put the management on warning they might lose their license. This is no idle threat.
these cops have already closed down or discouraged virtually every dance music event in the entire county), they also help Norfolk shut down free parties and monitor the internet for info even if its out of their area.
They make all events here comply with the Metropolitan Police devised dance music licensing/management procedure (called Safe and Sound) which is intended for UK garage events where they have problems with guns. This means a zero tolerance approach to drugs in the venue, and often states security must not be well known to the promoters to stop them allowing “preferred” dealers to operate. (in London they even make DJ’s go through searches and PNC checks!)
Unfortunately because a club in Ipswich did get shot up by London gangsters last year cops feel justified in doing this and much of the normal population support them in doing so.
To make matters worse, two of the murdered prostitutes were found to have got into class A drugs via the “party drugs” networks, and were clubbers/ravers (I think the young mixed race one was an acquaintance of some of my younger friends, and two of the other girls are known to my older friends).
The first suspects (the innocent one who got released last year) would turn up to Norfolk outdoor parties, the second one (in Court today) ran a pub (in Norfolk) which I think tolerated a lot of “youth drinking” and perhaps a few dance music events.
the cops are still angry over the Leah Betts incident 12 years ago, and because this area is coastal (three if not four active docks and lots of other places to land boats) they feel they have to go in harder against drug culture. This combination of events has led the cops to go full on zero tolerance as they feel stopping dance music events is the first step.

January 15, 2008 at 10:52 am #1152032leah betts died out of stupidity, i know that sounds harsh but its true
why are the cops angry about her in particular?
and from what you’ve said GL i really dont envy you suffolk lot, up here theres loads of ace clubs, pretty lenient (as long as people on DSI dont keep postin about the lax security!) and fortunately we havent had the middle england clampdown
it may be down to the fact the middle england exists less in the workin-class north? i dunno
coppers seem wankers down there too, like that suffolk party video

It was not her fault that there was little information about drugs available at the time. The only reason we all know is because of sites like this and erowid, which I doubt would have been very easy to access in her time.
I mean at school I was told verious different bollocks about drugs, which mostly turne dout to be not true. I mean FFS it was a police man who the school invited in to tell me how to safely use drugs.

January 15, 2008 at 2:04 pm #1152028They were thrown out after random searches were carried out on them and very small amounts of drugs were found on them.
boothy wrote:why are the cops angry about her in particular?Because she was the daughter of an ex copper. He killed her (trying to help her I might add) and will not come to terms with that and is still waging a war he cannot win with scare tactics.
A legal party we threw a week after her death got hit in a BIG way by police flexing their muscles. They pretty much locked down yarmouth seafront and were beating people for apparently no reason. They arrested 63 people that weekend and only 3 were charged. 2 of those were handed over by venue security.

Leah was a victim of the overwhelming ignorance which resulted from the ‘just say no’ campaign and the fact that those closest to her , when they had no idea how to correctly treat her, apparently did not seek/receive adequate medical advice on how best to help her [possibly as the drug she had taken was illegal].
:hopeless:

Green Derek stood up to him (Betts) on Anglia TV and him to his face he was responsible for his daughter’s death.
A brave move but I wouldn’t be surprised if that is why to this day cops across all East Anglian Police forces hate the electronic dance music scene with a passion – Unfortunately despite being a muppet Betts still had plenty of friends in the force – to them they feel “the drug-friendly liberal do-gooders broke the spirit of a good copper”

Its also a big fallacy that Norfolk police are more “tolerant” than suffolk, their lenience is merely due to lack of resources and they have merged their force support teams specifically to try and deal with “cross border” crime such as raves.
