Imagine an aircraft is sat on the beginning of a massive conveyor belt/travelator type arrangement, as wide and as long as a runway, and it intends to take off. The conveyer belt is designed to exactly match the speed of the wheels at any given time, moving in the opposite direction of rotation. There is no wind. Can the aircraft take off?

Don’t see why the aircraft cant take off, uplift is created by the air moving over the wings is it not?

Because the plane wouldnt move forward because the conveyor belt is going in the opposite direction to the wheels. So the plane would still be at a stand still, even tho its wheels may be moving, which would mean that there would be no moving air over the wings to create uplift. (or so someone told me:wink: )
