oh noes my sj alias will be discovered. its not me, swear.
um, right, my mate suggested we go help out homeless people or somethin. i know the principal of just doin it for xmas is a bit shit, gettin self-righteous n all, but its not like that i dont reckon
spose we just thought it’d be a good thing to do, then we can binge on everythin n anythin. good times.
but i dont have a clue, can you just walk in n help?
December 11, 2007 at 12:16 am #1126625it’s not impossible to volunteer to help out at xmas, but it’s mostly through church groups. all the homeless services (voluntary / charity etc) will have planned their staffing levels (including volunteers) for the xmas break months ago
offer your services any other time of year will be welcome
if you’re determined to help out on xmas day, why not invite a rough sleeper round for xmas dinner?

December 11, 2007 at 12:29 am #1126622why not do it in the new year around the “suicide season” when more people are gonna need that sort of help (relationships breaking up after the festive season, debts etc leading to more homleslessness?)

December 11, 2007 at 12:45 am #1126623yep Early Jan/Feb (festive period over and too cold/dark/wet for Spring), that sort of time…

December 11, 2007 at 12:45 am #1126627volunteering infrastructure is generally under resourced, so people like you who want to give a bit of time for a short time often get put off
many charities need volunteers who can make a longer term commitment. there are lots of reasons for this …. if you’re going to work with vulnerable people they need to CRB check you, if they are going to spend time training you they want more out of it than a few days etc
it’s understandable. it’s also why i spend a lot of time getting funding so people can just dip in and be supported to do so… once people get a taste they often want to take on more

December 12, 2007 at 12:07 pm #1126633we once find a guy sleeping on the ridge on xmas day, in a tent and freezing cold….we asked him to come for xmas dinner and he declined so we took him hot coffee and croissants to his tent and then later delivered him xmas dinner…..
