I know that I have another thread open about the sound system I am building but I thought I’d start again as plans have completely changed (But for the better)

I have actually got somewhere with this now. So far we have:

A sealed bass-bin with 2x 12″ eminence drivers (Could probably find out what models they are if need be)

A mid/top box with 2x 12″ eminence BETA 12A LT drivers in it (Which isnt built yet)

A high box with 2x Selenium ST324 slot tweeters in it (Which also isnt built)

The main thing I’m wondering is if it would be best to build the tweeters and 12″ mids into the same box or if it would be better to have them seperate (I’m thinkin seperate but I could be wrong)

When we have the money, we are also going to build a HOG design Scoop bin. I’d post the link to the plans but I dunno where they are on the web, I’ve just got a print out of them that I got off my mate. That will have an 18 inch driver in it and will hopefully tear down anywhere that it is placed

      raaa

      Electronic biznizz:

      Realistic MPA-100 amp
Ultra-Drive Pro DCX2496 Xover (On loan)
      Marantz EQ551 Graphic EQ

Thats about it for now. Apart from the obvious gaps in the system, namely not having enough amps, can anyone see anything else?

yeh, I’m just looking for general advice and any problems I might encounter etc..

      Cheers:bounce_fl

Oh yeh, Massive respect to James of the Ind. St Sound system for giving us all the stuff. Never would have been able to do it without you.

Is the 2×12″ bass bin a Wicked One by any chance? If so, one Hog scoop isn’t really worth building, just get more Wicked Ones.

Avent got a clue mate. I didn’t build it, James Ind. St had it spare. If you send me the link to the plans then I could probably ID it. Its a fairly big box with the 2 drivers facing each other inside the box. Its got 4 ports (One at each corner) and 2 holes in the middle to let the bulk of the sound out.Its fairly beefy but I’d still rather have that and a hog with an 18″ driver in it coz it would absolutely tear down any small venue and thats really what were looking for at first

Oh yeh, could someone send me the link to the hog plans because as I said before, I’ve only got a print-out.

Although in your head it might sound logical it really would be better to take Toasty’s advice and build one type of cab for one type of bass duty.

What you describe is not a “WickedOne” though. If you like the Hog design then run with that and make a few of them rather than throw in the bandpass sub you are describing. Obviously if it’s a cost issue at the moment then just go with what you’ve got, but you’d benefit from having all the same bottom end cabinets unless you plan on splitting the bass duty in to sub and kick.

Cheers for the hog plans. Yeah, its mostly a cost issue at the moment as we have extremely little money until I can get a job which I’m having difficulty doing at the moment.

Thats a good idea about splitting into sub and kick. I’d never thought of that one. In that case I’ll split them. No idea how to do that yet but my mate will be able to. Something using the Xover I presume?

Don’t know if anyone answered your first question, but to do so – yes, you are better off leaving your mids and highs in seperate cabinets – it means a bit more setup with getting the time alignments right, but will be worth it in terms of the quality.

The 12’s you are describing sound like the old angled 2×12’s from the Fane audio cookbook – you’ve 2 drivers angled in at 45 degrees each, with ports both sides? If that is the case, they’re good for low mid duty, but are unlikely to generate the sub you’re looking for (used a set of these once, but like I say – for low mid duty). You’re likely best going for what Biotech says and the 18’s – these will generate the kind of sub you’re looking for, and with about the same amp power…

Yeah they are the ones I’m on about. That sounds like a good plan to be honest. I’ll probably do that then.

Thats very very true, MrAHC. As long as it sounds half decent and is loud and people dance to it, we’ll be happy.

I’d hold off and learna bit of the audio theory first. It will save youa lot of money in the long run and you will end up with a nicer sounding rig for a lot less money that is easier to move arround.

That and you will be able to work it.

4x foward facin kick bass cabs wit 15″ 400rms drivers
4x 15″ mid and high speakers with flared horns, cant remeber what power they were

pretty chuffe dwith the price of the amps too, got a 2500 watt citronic amp, 2x 1500 watt c-mark amps and a behringer crossover for just under 450. all brand new.

all very easy to set up and move about.

looking to get some folded subs sometime tho and one of them behringer ultradrives gadgets, cos ive heard you get all sorts of phase issues using foward firing and folded cabs together?

Yeh well thats what I were thinkin. I know quite a bit about it already but nowhere near the amount we need. My mate, who I’m doin all this with (And with a few other people) is a producer and he knows exactly what he’s talkin about when it comes to the theory so with our knowledge combined we should be able to get it sounding nice for now but when we start getting a lot bigger then yeh we will need to know more.

Aah couldn’t possibly give you any advice about that last bit, beyond me! I’m sure one of the very helpful people on ere will answer it soon enuff tho!:weee:

In answer to the first bit, The only things we’ve got that are actually built and running at the moment are a sealed bass cab with 2 12″ drivers in it that James from the Ind. St sound system very kindly built and donated (Along with everything else we have) and an old mono DJ monitor which is shop-bought (Not by us though).

But yeh we should be building the cabs for the mids and tweeters at some point this week.

When we’ve saved up a bit of cash for an 18″ driver and some Birch Ply we are building a HOG design scoop bin though.

Forgot I had the info for them 12″ mid drivers we’ve got. Downloaded this from the Eminence website but I dunno if it will be useful to me or not.

What we really need are some plans for a box for them. Also, out of all the boxes listed in this pdf, which one would we use for mids?

For your own good don’t buy a driver and then pick a box for it unless you know about thiele / small parameters. DO it the other way round…find a plan and use on eof the reccomended drivers. It saves a load of grief at parties when you are forcing a driver to perform outwith its operating capacities and it gives up the ghost on you after only a few hours. Each driver is designed to be put into a certain type of box and while it may work in another it may not be able to handle the stresses.

Also deciding which box to use is again difficult as you need to decide on all your other boxes at the same time to avoid speakers covering the same frequencies or gaps being left between the different boxes and all the other nonsense.

Its very easy to get caught up in the idea of gettin rig asap but the best way is to look at the big picture and plan properly as otherwise you will end up spending more money on a bad sound than you would on a good one.

Yeh thats what I’m gunna do for all the other stuff I buy but I got these drivers for free so I couldn’t plan for a box beforehand because I didn’t know what I was going to get.
I completely agree with you that it all has to be planned out. Me and ma mate were talkin about that yesterday. We were sayin that the more we think about it and take it steady the better its going to sound and the cheaper its gunna be.

So, anyone know what kind of box I should put these in?
