What about the loss of footage when Gerrard scored, ITV are fucking terrible. They shouldn’t be allowed to show football games!
I used to work on the studio control systems for a lot of TV companies so was curious as to how such a epic FAIL could happen. Just researched what happened and it (and ITV as a whole) is an example of the realities of capitalism.
ITV doesn’t transmit TV any more! one reason I got laid off from my old job was due to ITV downsizing so we had less customers. Transmission is outsourced to an French company called Technicolor (but based in London).
The equipment they use has a certain level of idiot-proofing on the buttons on the control console, but commercial TV stations are set so adverts automatically have the top priority over any other content.
if someone presses the wrong button and triggers the ads, there is absolutely fuck all they can do until the ads are played out. They can press buttons on the console for all they want but they are locked out and can’t switch back to the live feed until the ad has been played. All the commercial stations I worked for had their systems deliberately designed like this.
Maybe senior engineers can override this but ads are in fact worth more than content – had the fuck up been the other way round and the ad not played out ITV would have got sued by Hyundai…

June 14, 2010 at 7:19 pm #1226864Hyundai must be loving it! Let’s just hope it doesn’t happen again on Friday.

I don’t let stuff like that bother me. I wasn’t alive back then so I ain’t ashamed about it. Plus it wasn’t just England involved then, it was practically all of Europe.
All past events are exactly that. In the past, We gotta think about the future and our future at present is beating those pesky Algerians!
I am going to get so battered down the pub on Friday. It’s going to be a good night! raaa

But why on earth would people want to associate it with football? not asking anyone to feel shame about it, but to effectively use it as a metaphor for the world cups seems balmy to me. Its one thing that really does put me off, although I am really enjoying the football this time round the things that are associated with it seem very odd.
I saw someone from that Help for Heroes charity dressed up in the same crusades knight costume, even more strange given the nature of the charity. I know history is badly taught in schools and doesn’t cover things like the crusades but still…

Knights weren’t just involved in the Crusades but modern day romanticism of the “age of chivalry” in England shortly after the Crusades means that when most people think of a knight its the sort of image people have of them and they have over the years been viewed as a symbol of England – rather bizzarely as everywhere else in Europe had knights as well.
Our local ITV station here (the one which would close down with the national anthem and pictures of the Royal family) used to have a statue of a knight as a logo, it still appears on the news! the statue was commissioned by a Dutchman and somehow found its way to Norfolk.

Do you know what the funny thing is. People who dress up as Knights Templars might not realise that the templar sect actually originated in France.
And before that, St George displayed the same colours and he was supposedly a Roman Soldier!
Also when you delve into the crusades further it was (according to historians) started by the Byzantine Empire. The Kingdom of England then got involved as the Emperor at the time called for help and Christians from all over Europe answered the call.
It’s mad when you actually look into it, you realise it wasn’t England who started any of it. 😉

thats the sort of fuckup which today will get a TV industry worker at least a written warning and there are always hundreds of deluded fools willing to take their job. but he or she was probably told by the boss to play out the ads and they would get just as much trouble for disobeying..
ITV is only a small part of Technicolors business and even when I was working in the industry (over 10 years ago now!) a lot of people said that one operator would have to multi-task on several channels at once and fuck ups like this are inevitable.
I was the youngest engineer on the team (then still in my 20s) and many of the older folk especially in ITV said it was a dying industry and not worth it any more and were waiting for their redundancy payments.

So its even more inaccurate then lol
Just watched le match, surprised Italy weren’t better, although I thought they were going to get a second as they did pick up their game. Roll on Friday.

See for some reason I associate knights in shining armer with chivalry and the crusades with chain mail and the flag on the chest. Not quite sure why lol
Perhaps its just something that I have associated with it and its not general across the population, which would explain a lot.

June 19, 2010 at 6:56 pm #1226867England played so badly last night. There was no passion and I’d say last nights game was like watching the French play.
They need to sort it the fuck out. Rooney is a prick as well. Having a go at the fans for booing. What did he expect, he and the rest of em were totally rubbish.
I can’t see us winning against Slovenia on Wednesday specially if they play like they did last night. :yakk:
