Silence Noisy Neighbors by Transmitting Your Music to Their Speakers

If you have a neighbor that’s playing their music too loudly, you can get them back by hijacking their speakers with a little DIY project.

Some people are more than a little inconsiderate, and when a friendly note or call to your landlord doesn’t solve the problem, sometimes you need to take matters into your own hands. Evil genius and electrical guru junkyardmessiah over at Reddit came up with this DIY solution:

In deference to XKCD the real way to cause problems with her system is pretty simple. You need a Cheap CB radio, A linear amp, and a bottom loaded CB antenna (easier to build a ground plane for it). See if you can get a good guess where she has her [speakers] set up and get your antenna close as you can to it. You should be able to talk to her THROUGH her stereo system. The amplifier sections are not shielded in these plastic ready made toys and the resulting AM signal will impact it. In my case I ran a continuous 6khz tone from a signal generator which was more than enough to blow it up good. ENJOY!

Essentially, with a few tools, you can transmit your voice, play an annoying tone, or even blast your own music through their speakers—even if their speakers are turned off. If you’re truly evil, you could probably blow out their speakers too, but that could have repercussions. Different states have different legal issues pertaining to these types of devices, too, so check with your area’s laws—if such things concern you—before you start plotting. There’s this organization called the FCC that might have a thing or two to say about your transmission, too, so this is definitely a proceed-at-your-own-risk situation.

it will work, but in more socially developed and civilised countries (like most EU ones) – and to be fair many parts of the USA you would get in far more trouble for deliberately transmitting a poor quality radio signal of this nature without a license to do so and specifically to cause interference than for making more noise yourself, and far less for involving ther proper authorities if doing so is justified (such as a young family with kids who have tried to be friendly but have been threatened when they asked nicely for the music to be turned down).

if anyone tries that stunt anywhere near the North Sea where similar frequencies to CB are used for vital comms between ships. oil rigs etc, soon they will meet the Enforcement Officers of the national Ministry of Communications, along with many policemen and other officials and it will be they who become the villain rather than the noisemakers…

That said living on a “low income” housing estate doesn’t give anyone the right to make excesive noise – I live in such a place but there are lots of young families and old people around so I try to keep my music within reasonable levels and times.

And when you live in a area of England that is suffering a major backlash against the drugs scene of the 1990s onwards, I’d consider a neighbour who likes and tolerates loud music to be more of an ally than enemy – even if you may not like their sort of music as much as your own – at least one of my own neighbours likes grime/dubstep – not my favourite but it means I don’t get hassle if I occasionally want to play my music louder

FFS even basshunters is better than them lot… mind you I did once work with a lot of engineers from SVT and other national broadcasters and they take stuff like Eurovision really seriously. but if you play UK dance music loud, would they tolerate you or turn you in to the council authorities?

I think I would be reported to the board (all apartment block even if you own your apartment is run by a board).
You can lose the right to live there if you piss enough people off.
Music here is so bad that I just want to cry.

Basshunter is seen as really cool here. Even though I think he is shit and cheesy.

We have a huge run up to Eurovision called Melodifestivalen and the WHOLE country will be glued to the heats to see who from each region will be in the semi finals and then the finals to represent Sweden in Eurovision.

People actually cancel plans to stay home and watch these tv programs which run over about a month or little more.
The people who sing are super famous (in Sweden) and its the same people year after year who are in the top 3-4 to go through.

On the radio the eurovision heat songs are played to death.
Radio here up where I live is so shite that I sometimes feel like going to the station and having a full on melt down and burn the place down. Same songs played over and over each hour until you just want to slash your wrists. Unfortunately in the car (I drive a lot each day for work) I only have radio and a really old cd player that doesnt play MP3 so am a bit screwed.

TBH this is now the same in most parts of England and it seems even many Northern European nations – even “dance” stations like Kiss have been heavily watered down. We get two hours of “townie dance” on our community radio station at weekends if we are lucky. During the daytime its all good and worthy talk stuff (including rather a two hour show entirely in Chinese). That said this area (East Anglia) is more like many Scandinavian or Teutonic countries than London)

this doesn’t surprise me at all – anyone what writes a entire pop song about a chatroom bot must be into his techie stuff (to be fair in these countries it is cold during winter but they have good broadband so people spend whole winters at home playing on computers and I don’t blame them..)

he pays for 6 accounts …

He sits about logged in on all of them at the same time (he’s got several computers and loads up 2 accounts on each computer), Lines ALL his chars up in a neat row, then uses a macro to make them all do exactly the same thing at the same time and say the same things at the same time …. it’s quite funny really. I allways try and sneek a few shots off at him tho and try and kill him before the guards catch me (you can’t attack people in town without getting chased down by everyone and the guards). :laugh_at:
