If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.

With Enron, you would have had $16.50 left of the original $1000.00.

With WorldCom, you would have had less than $5.00 left.

If you had purchased $1000 of Delta Air Lines stock you would have $49.00 left.

But, if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer/wine one year ago, drank all the beer/wine, then turned in the cans/bottles for the recycling REFUND, you would have had $214.00.

Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to Drink heavily and recycle.

that is a old email from the last recession..

Nortel recovered its value in a rally around 03/04 but you’d still only have made $26 as of today and lost your shirt completely on the other companies all of which went Chapter 11 (bankrupt)

however, scrap metal and glass is worth even more today!

Whole scrap cars are always variable in price and first to be hit by a downturn as its a lot of effort taking them apart and separating the metal from the other bits and all the paperwork (thus increasing overheads)

but cans/bottles are more easily collectable recyclable and often continue more valuable aluminium…. I think glass is recycled into new bottles or other items a fair bit closer to the UK or EU due to its lower value per weight anyway..

prices have dropped drastically for steel (litereally in the past few days) but less for aluminium – thats the market at work, increased recycling means there is more material and less demand so the price will eventually drop

even with the drop I checked the indexes of metal prices back to 2001/02 when that email was doing the rounds – you’d still get more for the cans/bottles than those shares (and have enjoyed the booze).

You can make stuff out of metal and glass, but share certificates of failed yank tech companies aren’t even much use as toilet paper (a while back I was given “share options” by a former employer and they became worth fuck all shortly after I was made redundant..)

unfortunate but looks like everyone jumped on the bandwagon and crashed it… its literally this last few weeks the prices have plummeted..

the recent party crews missed a big trick IMO by not separating/weighing in the cans during the “good times”!

still no price reductions in new reels of copper wire though (my employer is actually expanding so we will need a fair bit soon)

I live in the same area as SUBVERSION and asked some friends of mine who had just weighed in a load a few days ago and they hadn’t seen a price drop so this is really recent..

yep – although round here there are (or were) feds watching every scrapyard and posters in every village warning people to be alert..
