Studio3 is a fantastic example of this. They were alway very easy going when I did stuff there, the bouncers let a lot of stuff slide, and were a lot better than most places (I know at least one is a very sound guy.) However, as usual, everyone took the piss and they had to clamp down.
The owners also did have alot of meetings with the police a few years back who were not happy about the rave crews using the venue, and they did work hard to get them to accept that there had to be somewhere to go!

If we could been seen to be doing some more positive things then that cannot be a bad idea.I’m happy to support this with the following caveat – if they’re gonna chat stuff about recruiting youths to shut down power stations with hand woven banners of yoghurt or invading “polluting industries” offices then they are simply gonna get fucked over by feds as hard as the ravers have been getting… plus they will just get laughed at (I expect they realise that anyway)
however if they are able to spread the word on how to do positive stuff what doesn’t involve so much risk of getting nicked and helps everyone things like bicycle maintenance workshops, growing plants, even guerilla gardening then I reckon it will work
IMO 99% of all eco groups are preaching to the converted when its the average chav in the street they need to be getting their ideas through to…

What he said 😉

The movement is about standing up and being counted, and civil disobidence is part of that. When normal people start being prepared to go to jail for their beliefs, then government starts to pay attention. So there will be a direct action campaign, but no-one is really sure what that will take the form of.
The thing that you would have missed about the climate camp if you only watched the main stream media was the week of discussion, debates, training and more discussion about what is going on right now, and what the alternatives are to it. Everyone know what the ‘No’ is- it’s working on the ‘Yes’ that’s the tough bit. but you can’t really go on about the no unless you have a number of alternatives to support it.
I’d suggest looking into the Transition Town movement as a good place to start.
September 22, 2008 at 11:52 pm #1179382a quick follow up
the event was cancelled but we were allowed to go ahead with the same rig and DJs in a “totally unrelated event” at a different venue in town
another crew has been granted a TEN for the same location for an event in a few weeks time
so it was all down to how it was presented on this and other websites
the internet is to blame
September 23, 2008 at 9:56 am #1179398although its not the best turn out its a result,
well done mate!
September 23, 2008 at 10:24 am #1179363what other sites was the event advertised on? TBH I suspect a lot of the cops’ paranoia over the internet is simply because people are prepared to travel long distances as the authorities have been successful in stopping dance music events in other areas, so they feel online ads will increase the numbers beyond manageable capacity…

FYI,
Dont know how familiar you are with NewScientist but they issue a lot of climate related material. A recent issue (16th Aug 2008) is titled “climate change – the next 10 years” which gives an indepth scientific view of the situation along with some innovative ideasOne idea i heard about sometime ago but seems to have gone quiet was solar cells printed on a thin film that could be produced at greatly reduced cost as a result of lower material qty. Technology will be key to mitigating climate issues (although how much damage has already been done is still not clear)

Glad to hear your event is still going ahead. I was tempted to go to the location advertised but suppose after reading this thread decent events will not be so freely advertised. Perhaps just kept to subscribers:wink:
October 15, 2008 at 12:07 pm #1179383…we can’t talk about free parties; the couple of voices that are trying to pass on lessons from the past are largely ignored (e.g. message that waveform ripping off crews and ensuring that licensed sites are placed out of action for evermore… ignored)
Whats this about waveform? And what grounds do the police have to make you delete posts on here?
