Watch this great documentary on raving in abandoned nuclear reactors in the Black Sea – Raving in the Black Sea | Music World | VICE
Interesting film this, and not just for the sheer amount of tits. Basically, there’s this place in the Ukraine called Kazantip that’s declared itself to be a “rave republic”. There’s an (admittedly very loose) political hierarchy, and there are a few people in the film who seem to sincerely believe in Kazantip in a political sense. Do we think it’s possible to politicise dance music?
It’s something that’s been bugging me for a while, what with the focus on grime/dubstep/dancehall/road rap soundsystems/phones soundtracking the protests (riots?) in the UK. Looking around VICE a bit, there was this in Switzerland (of all places), too: Party On, Dubstep Dudes | VICE
So, the republic of Kazantip – anyone want to move there with me?
