me and paul m have just acquired 2 new rats (to keep our giant african land snails company!)…they’re soooooo cute, i’m obsessed with them at the mo’ and want to tell everyone the good news! :cloud9: :cloud9: :weee: :weee: :cloud9: :cloud9:
August 25, 2005 at 2:32 pm #1066844Cute!
Rats would be wicked to have around the house, but i’m not sure they’d appreciate the cats.
August 25, 2005 at 2:36 pm #1066852cute ain’t they! I really wanna a cat but live on a busy road, can’t afford vet bills etc. I’d also really love a pig!! 😉
August 25, 2005 at 2:59 pm #1066845We’ve got 2.
Solomon isn’t a lot of trouble apart from having a nasty habit of pissing in the house. Dave we took in one winter when he kept coming in to the house really filthy. He still acts like a street cat though and gets in fights with plenty of dogs and cats and eats out of the nearby take-away bin. He has stolen from the shop round the corner too (i’m assuming)… a whole jumbo sausage roll still in wrapper. He dragged it all the way back to the house and put it in his bowl.
He’s great but we’ve probably spent near on £700 in vet bills etc due to his hardcore nature.

I thought you were saying you had two rats to start with…and thought that was one tough rat when you said he fights with cats and dogs!doh! I love the image of the moggy dragging the wrapped up sausage roll all the way to his bowl!!
i love cats, they’re wicked but sheesh £700! it cost about a £1000 when my parents cat got hit by a car, but you just gotta find the money from somewhere haven’t you
animals rule, i’ve got a feeling i’m gonna end up being some crazy old lady with a house full of animals and no kids (i just don’t get the appeal of kids!) :cloud9:August 25, 2005 at 3:11 pm #1066842thanks for the pics! Its actually quite difficult to find a good picture of a young rat on the net (also confusingly called a kitten!)..
its not uncommon for pet cats to steal items; although the wrapped sausage roll has to be a first. One Siamese stole all sorts of items including a mobile phone and dropped it in at the cat flap – it was referred to a special vet in the end for behaviour therapy!
because of the aftermath of foot and mouth you need a farmers land ID number to keep a pig (even as a pet) these days… (although all this involves is filling in a form and perhaps someone coming round to check your pig is kept in appropriate conditions)
August 25, 2005 at 5:37 pm #1066846Actually. While we are at it. Here is a little piccy of Dave (the slightly mad one) in his favourite kind of place… a box. Must be another legacy from his street days.
August 26, 2005 at 9:54 am #1066863AnonymousWe adopted a stray cat once, actually it more or less squated without our permission. It was the most arrogant stuck up ‘pet’ I’ve ever had, ironic considering it was a bloody stray. First time my sister and I got our hands on it we tried to throw it in a car and dump her two miles away. Well you read all these stories about pets finding their way home from hundreds of miles away after getting lost on holiday, so we thought we’d test the theory. Eventually we moved leaving the thing where it was, but me ma riddled with guilt went to look for her and she swears to God the neigbours ate the cat. It’s the way they used to look at it when we had it in the garden that convinced her. We asked the new owners of the house and they said they saw the cat one but then it disapeared. Coinsidence? I don’t think so.

August 26, 2005 at 11:54 am #1066860Anonymouscats are all good, my housemate has kind of spoilt ours, so its a bit of a twat.
rats, on the other hand are wicked! my mates round the corner have two, lee scratch and king tubby. i’ll have to try and get some shots, they are proper ruud boys. i love goin round there and making castles and runways and caves and stuff for them to explore, its like making a computer game level, where the more hardcore the rat is, the better treats he’ll find.
my girl’s sister used to have hers livin under her jumper all the time- even went to school with her! she has a lot of holy jumpers now.
ratbert and ernie! cuter than cute! say hi to them both.:weee:
August 26, 2005 at 3:12 pm #1066855i’ll say hi to the rats and i’m sure they’ll send you a big ‘squeak!’ back 😉
aren’t they the sweetest, i’m besotted!August 26, 2005 at 3:29 pm #1066861Anonymoushave you introduced them to the snails? i wonder which would eat the other first?
rat vs snail deathmatch savagery.
or the rats might just clean their shells for em! :good_evil
ps: stick up pics of the snails- theyre rude!

i used to have 2 rats, but i had a party and someone put whiskey in their water bowl and i didn’t find out until too late and they both died (one right away and the other of kidney failure soon after
bastard
i found out who it was and went to his house and put his goldfish in the bongwater and smoked some big bongs… the fish was never the same again… he used to float around on his side and stuff
had to get my own back somehow
not proud of it, but there you go
August 26, 2005 at 6:13 pm #1066847He probably didn’t think it would do any harm. But I hate animal cruelty. I can stomach human cruelty much easier (although it’s still a bit shit like).
Being a meat eater, that’s probably huge hypocrisy on my part though.

Rats cannot vomit (unlike primates and other mammals) so they can easily overdose on alcohol or other toxic substance
I’ve heard of rats being given small amounts of watered-down beer, but the vets do not recommend this (nor feeding them junk food). It used to be a common practice to let pub dogs drink left-over beer ….
As for drunken primates and rodents, I remember at my friends house one hippy girl had acquired a huge cage of mice (started off with one pregnant female which produced about 10+ offspring!) which she kept in one room.
One of our crew had got very drunk throughout the night and eventually retired to the upstairs room (with the cage) to crash out – so pissed that he did not switch on the light or anything, just walked in and crashed out on the bed, completely unaware he had company
Anyway he woke some hours later, wanting to go to the loo – switched on the light, and found himself staring at all the mice.
He jumped out of bed, shouting “HELP! HELP! RATS!” and literally ran out of that room – and despite our protestations that the cages were secure and they were only mice[1] he refused to sleep in that room and slept on a stair-well instead!
[1] can’t tell a small rat apart from a large mouse? look at the ears. Mice have bigger ears…
August 29, 2005 at 12:07 pm #1066862I used to have two rats, Fang and Demon. Contrary to popular belief they are actually very clean (females don’t smell as bad as the males) and very intelligent, they make excellent pets. I loved mine so much, but then my little sister decided to hover one up, and the other died of lonliness….shame..

we introduced them just last night, ratbert tried to eat the snail (but tries to eat anyhting you put in front of his face!) they were intrigued by the snails (as they are with anything new!!). bloody snails-just cleaned them out last night and then they went and laid more eggs straight afterwards-doh!
its cool, the rats are starting to run over to us in their cage when we get near them-this makes me very happy :cloud9:
