loads of my friends did take on this kind of offer, to do a story short almost all of them is back as free-lance…those steady jobs is often also the most boring, like gear cleaning/check, storage, loading, unloading etc, those who stayed on was promoted into project leaders and high rise rigging…..

That’s basically it. It was a warehouse job, mainly prepping gear and loading trucks. To be fair I would have been leading a team and the planning aspect is a challenge in itself, but it’s still largely box-pushing at the end of the day. I doubt I would have lasted more than a couple of months and it would just piss off the company and the rest of the team if I did that anyway. There is scope for career progression but it would mean sticking at it for a few years and then, as you said, getting promoted to management. I’m still young, and more interested in the operational side of sound engineering for the time-being, even if that does mean stressful periods of not knowing where the next bit of cash is coming from.
A lot of the noise boys I know seem to either flake out in their early 30s and go into project management or some other tech job like IT, or they do it until they become grizzly old men that work until their hearing finally gives in.
Do you work in artist management or something similar?

March 5, 2012 at 7:49 pm #1129604Only on tour. I worked as crew leader in all kinds of production or I was boss on the projects (mostly tents and stage-floors), but now I am mostly in touring both as driver and manager(late when the crew and artists are too wasted to even sort-out their own shoe-strings…. lol) I do some production manager work as well, after too many 18+ days and 3 hrs sleeps in the season my body have taken what it can take, so it is only boss work for me now, ok sometimes I drive some fork-lift because thats an easy way to sort out the crew managing….You can easily have 3-4 crews working at the same time while you feed them with products….
