its a problem in the more impersonal ones run from London/SE England and I guess maybe in Northern cities as well but where I work its a very close knit family business and the clients and staff (obviously other than those from PH, IN , ID etc!) are all from the same areas… where I work someone who doesn’t have the right attitude isn’t gonna last long anyway…

Thats nice to hear – this one was in Bristol – if you’ve not seen it – I’d recommend, as it is frightening, worrying TV as ‘it happens’ and I guess it happens even in smaller communities – no one watching maybe (I’ve not only lived here but in some smaller west country suburbs) … some times breeds contempt, where I live now is suburbia and one of the care homes – what ??- 4 roads away from my house (that my uncle was looking to go in) ended up on one of these programs — yep they sacked all the staff but kept the managers / owners…… shocking – I had a job interview there about a year later…. nothing had changed… :

June 2, 2011 at 11:24 pm #1129280All the managers at my work had watched it and were talking about it.. unfortunately though I think its part of a wider problem which goes outside institutions, the weak/vulnerable are preyed on if there isn’t people to watch out for stuff… (there’s been a fair few articles in the Grauniad about this, particularly the abuse of younger folk with LD or other disability who are given social houseing by others in their own communities)
And even within well run healthcare places places its not easy as one bad person can cause a lot of problems and often younger UK-based workers especially don’t like “grassing” and don’t like authority structures, whilst the only way is to make it clear that people are being watched and judged for their behaviour..

June 2, 2011 at 11:37 pm #1130466This is what I am saying – I am shocked that only one person (apparently) reported it – I have worked in all sorts of environments – and i must say I have NEVER seen such systematic abuse in what ?… 22 years working or volunteering ( I started at 12 – 13 yr old with ‘hard core’ poorly physically and mentally learning disabilities) in this sort of environment – I was shocked and so were work colleagues – who have worked day in day out – in the UK and who are now living abroad and in all sorts of caring environments (as it – obviously has been a bit of a discussion topic – hence why I watched it tonight ) In my experience – you may get the odd ‘wrong un’ who is brought to justice pretty quickly and reported by staff (I have worked in lots of institutions around the country in all this time ) but to see this amount of abuse by all staff (turning a blind eye is just as bad)- or accepted by all the staff is weird. I am shocked, as I have said I have reported people before and that has been unusual – and i was not looked on nicely as ‘its not the done thing’ but fuck em… this is how I see it

I think a lot of folk in this country genuinely have much less empathy for others than in previous years, whether its at work, on the street, even at social gatherings.
I agree it is perhaps rare in healthcare as this industry is supposed to attract caring people, its not so rare in other industries, even overt workplace violence between staff is sometimes common. when I used to listen on radio scanner in the 90s I’d quite often hear it kick off on building sites and even offices with feds being called to sort out workplace disputes..
And much more common (in commercial business) is low level bullying amongst staff, sabotage of other departments procedures and customer service initiatives deliberately trying to get rid of “difficult” customers (including stealing customers personal data). I’ve known all of this and then some to happen in the IT and financial services industries I worked in before I went into IT for healthcare… Of whilst its rarer someone gets physically hurt/abused but fuckloads of money get lost and good people disillusioned through this dysfunctional behaviour..

June 3, 2011 at 6:45 am #1150087Hi Tank Girl and General Lighting ,
Just watched that programe on Winterbourne View and its made me really angry , i cant believe that that sort of treatment was allowed to go on . The fact that it was reported by a senior nurse and it was ignored and left to carry on , that and two cases were patients were injured through abuse …..alarm bells should have been ringing !!!! . It makes you wonder how many other places are like this and also does the Authority know or even care ? .
regards
