Hi !sinner69! ,
I think your right in what you say ….but i think in general through out government there is a serious lack of common sense . And Health and safety and any “$£$% safety . Take General Lighting’s place of work for example …….say there was a fire and my lot turned up ……..we’d ask advice from the General as he knows his site or any worker or out of hours theres normally a phone number . Okay so the General gets sorry mate but frame room what ever has just gone up how do we isolated the supply …….General……not some pen pushing , clip boards wearing twat that may come once a year but has to every year come up with some stupid idea that this is wrong etcI think all Health and safety ….fuck it “£$£$% what ever safety should be placed in an inch glass air tight cabinet and only broke in an emergency !!!!!! you with me …..lets make it so 🙂
regards

you got bt frame room , authorized personnel only , high vaultage keep out …..or words to that effect
yep there’s a big sign on there warning against unauthorised persons and electric hazard as there is a lot of mains wiring and some equipment will stay energised from the UPS even if the power is cut.
ironically another bit of cost cutting is that BT didn’t even bother to mount the NTE5 (telephone sockets) on the wall or provide us with a proper frame, they left them dangling on the end of cable at the bottom of our rack unit, there are much better and tidier ways of connecting up the phone lines which if I’d had a chance to have a proper discussion with Openreach I could have sorted out in advance, but they don’t let you speak directly to engineers as the contract is between Openreach and another bit of BT..
And of course the fire safety lot sees all this as well and thinks the wiring is even more sketchy and dangerous than it is..
to be fair another Openreach engineer was there last week and didn’t approve of what the others had done, but because the building is now active its too late to remount the sockets as all the lines are carrying live data or phone calls and I’d have to go there specially and redo all the phone cabling and re-test everything..
there was a time in England you’d try to make the next persons job easier rather than more difficult…

We actually thought about that, there’s a proper smoke/fire detector in there linked to the main panel, and on Friday I was checking the paperwork the sparky’s left in each dis board so I know exactly where all the isolators are… I’ve seen power supplies in IT kit go up before and they are nasty as the low voltage high current can create a lot of heat, and toxic smoke too (actually one what went up took TV2 denmark off air for a bit, they sent it back with a note “there have been a fire”)

it seems a lot more distance than it is in London because the place is crowded. In fact in comparison with most provincial towns, pedestrians aren’t going very far at all.

May 11, 2011 at 5:18 pm #1150035Hi Harr!et ,
Try and think of things that make you smile 🙂 . Many years ago when i was at wittering we some times had to walk back from Stamford after a night out . There is this long road on a slight hill out of stamford , the path was wide and on the left it had a high stone wall . Well one night i decided if i closed my eyes and kept my left hand on the wall i would not notice the distance and be up that road in no time at all . Now wether its cos i had a few but it did seem to work and it seemed alot quicker .Yes i know not very sensible but i was young and stupid ……now im just old and stupid . I wouldn’t recommend this so please dont try this and certainly not in London or any built up area for that matter !!!!!
regards
