January 18, 2011 at 12:41 am #1129231I don’t use social networks, I don’t trust them and am not really involved in the music scene any more anyway so don’t have anything to promote..that said I am involved in some environment groups but we scrape together the cash and rent our own server, and put our own software there, forum, mailing list, blogs etc, that way no zuckerberg or murdoch can hold control over the resources or our content raaa
in 1990s England people took action to “reclaim the streets”, now in 2010 we must “reclaim the internet”

January 18, 2011 at 1:14 am #1129232even yahoo has managed to add so much crap to their mailing lists these days they have become unuseable for sending out a simple newsletter (all the HTML formatting gets changed), and the group I work with tolerated them for many years (even though their ads trigger their own spam filters!)
there is a lot to be said for the old 1990s style DIY culture as opposed to thinking big companies are gonna keep giving us free stuff (even with ads all over it) when the economy is fucked..

January 18, 2011 at 1:34 am #1129457The thing about myspace was you had almost total freedom over your space and you could do advanced layout, it was fun to play with and try get it right, or just make it simple. now they have taken that away, now its just simple and bad and that is their death course. 500 in (europe alone) staffs was sacked last week and as understand it is almost dead already, I had good use for it to have all the bands im driving in on one site….but the bands aint using it either…that I could read out of the activity streem…facebook got them or they have made their own site with freedom to make cool layout. NOW I need a beer…

aw, you’re so lucky to have naturally black hair 😀 i have to dye mine alot to keep it black, it’s so bad for it. i bet that bleaching it would be okay if you wanted to go red, unless it’s really damaged (like mine :|) i really do like red though.. but love my black too D:

yep I agree and thats exactly what I’ve seen as well, all my friends who are DJ’s/musicians have abandoned it, they are either on facebook or their own websites!
loads of “free” places to host stuff have closed down recently since the economic depression. I’ve been using the net since the start in the 1990s and could start a whole thread about the economics of it but the reality is all the “free” stuff will go away now the big investors are angry, especially as many people block online ads and others ignore their sales messages.
I don’t even think its that bad a thing, even though I like computers and technology it is better we use the internet just for basic communication or for keeping in touch with people across hundreds of kilometres, but instead spend more time actually socialising with one another, and/or doing real stuff in groups in our local areas?

yep can’t see the point of that TBH at least not at the dumbed down detail of FB –
I think its fair enough if Alice put up a proper blog post with photos of all the interesting things she saw on her bike ride, or even if Mike starts a online discussion about the best way to clean alloy wheels, or stuff about his car…
I can see why people use it to stay in contact but there’s a huge hidden cost especially if you are a bit older and want to keep your professional and leisure time separate – although my real name is a very common Chinese one so people insist they have found me on there even though I don’t use it and they are instead looking at the profile of some random Chinaman :laugh_at: (whats even more confusing is some of them do look a bit like me and also work in IT/telecoms or healthcare :laugh_at:)
