this is the other domain. some bits are active but the forum needs a moderator to be on top of stuff like the chinese spam. for instance on here we get about 3 attempts every day.
unfortunately the cops enter places and arrest on suspicion of stealing electric (I’ve been nicked this way before!) – they can also claim health and safety risks and EDF / UK Power Networks work alongside the Police and private security guards to deal with stuff like this.
in recent times they often can and do use this as a way of getting the place back (also some new guidelines against anti-social behaviour).
ahh right thats the national TAA forum your on about.. i dont exactly know who takes care of that website other than its the london Random Artists crew.. they are pretty slack with updating the site thats for sure.. not all of brightons informations was updated this year which i think is why we didnt have a massive turnout from people outside of brighton.
how do you think squatting in general will be in say 5-10 years? do you think we will be following in footsteps of NL? brighton is becoming increasingly hard to squat. but i think this could be because of the link to activism such as EDO/ITT.. whereas London/Bristol/Manchester and other places have biggers issues ie gangs/crime and just leave it up to the courts to deal with.November 6, 2010 at 8:38 pm #1129190@smokeitup 405417 wrote:

the Tories plan to make squatting illegal in England and it was part of their manifesto – it is already a criminal offence in Scotland, which otherwise tends to be a bit more progressive than England in its politics!
one reason squatting was tolerated more in other nations is because the laws made it more costly for landlords to have short term tenants than in England – ironically due to laws set up to protect them!
I am not sure TBH if squats are clamped down on simply because of links with activism though it may seem that way. People in rented or owned houses round my way do a lot of protesting and get as much grief from the feds (there is Sizewell and various US military bases here).
its much more because of complaints from residential and commercial property owners over damage, theft, and the Police being jittery over the large scale use and sale of class A drugs.
I used to help out a lot of squatters in my old town of Reading (helped them get the power on and set up a bike workshop) but before I left noticed the scene was becoming increasingly sketchy, dominated by serious drug users (needles etc) and that they were funding their lifestyles by dealing and shoplifting/other theft.
ironically very few squatters in that areea were genuinely involved in progressive activism, it was mostly short term hedonism or not having any other alternative.
They weren’t evil people but its too easy to end up in the gutter in SE England just by making a few bad lifestyle choices. One squatter lad actually said he “wished he could be like me and have a stable job in a office” and regretted not paying attention at school etc.. :crazy_diz

thats the thing tho.. in brighton there is a main core of about 3 different squatting crews.. one of which deal alot of drugs and totally disrespect the properties they squat.. leaving damage like this.. Pictures of damage in £1m Brighton property after squatters leave (From The Argus) which gives ALL squatters a bad rep in Brighton. I wouldnt say the scene is driven by needles, but it is definatly driven by ketamine. Its sold openly from their squats- It was only recently, literally the day before Secret Garden that one of their squats got raided.. I was literally a couple of hours short of being there, or else i would have got caught up with it. Which would have looked great on my criminal record!!
I did hear the Tories plan on making it illegal.. Also for traveller families. they have already been given a hard tome of it recently.. but i ask.. what are they gonna do about it? Lock up everyone who lives in a van/camper/caravan/bus/truck/horse box?! alot of these people have children. I know of one group in brighton that are constantly harrassed by the police and told to move on.. but where to? I heard something about a legal site being set up and they council were actually given a substantial amount of funding to get this going but weve heard nothing since…

November 6, 2010 at 9:34 pm #1129191even the Tories aren’t that daft – what they will do is tolerate travellers who are genuinely working (many work on roads etc) and dont’ cause any shit but bust ones what are breaking any sort of law. My area is supposed to be zero tolerance but I know a lot of travellers what are allowed to park up on places with the permission of the property owner.
the speed freak squatters I knew (who used needles as well) were actually quite good people who would never trash a place, there was this girl what was sort of “in charge” and she used to do fuckloads of speed and then go on big cleaning missions, you could have ate your tea off the floor of some of the buildings they had.
there were occasionally squatters near where process lives but sadly some of their friends did trash the buildings they were in.
as for the tolerated travellers site, it can take years for anything to get built if the money isn’t there.

had some irish gypsies round here recently (one of them tried selling me lucky heather, im not taking the piss either), really dont get where they’re coming from at all. they rock up at the ends of roads, or some quiet bits of land near me. they were told that if they behaved and tidied up etc they could stay for a month. instead they’ve shitted everywhere, loads of toilet paper in the bushes, rubbish everywhere, so now they’ve been moved on a few times. they’ve done this exact same thing on two patches of ground near me. dont get it. they could still be there now if they had given just the slightest shit. created more hassle for themselves, dont get at all.

November 6, 2010 at 10:16 pm #1129193probably the same group or linked TBH as its all happened around the same time and loads of different people from my mates up near Diss (but “our” side of the Waveney) to the parish councillors near where I work are all of a sudden going on about this…
actually two councillors (one from MSDC the other from a local parish council) said exactly what you mentioned so it must be the same lot..
