I listen to the radio a lot in the evening especially, i have got really into BBC 6 music, just wondered if anyone on here were avid radio listeners or do you rely on the tele for your entertainment mainly…..the main problem i have with the tele is that there never seems to be anything descent on it…. but loads of repeats or trash…..which is why i have kinda given up on it…
May 23, 2012 at 11:40 pm #1253612Yes, although TBH much music radio I listen too comes from here rather than over the airwaves. I do listen to my local community station when it is broadcasting something in a language I understand (unfortunately just English or French, Chinese eludes me in spite of my ancestry, though Dad didn’t speak it either :laugh_at:) I am a former broadcast engineer and thus very fussy about sound and picture quality – both technical and content – and agree with you about the telly.
The only reason I bought a new one was when my mum comes to visit and it keeps her occupied in the evening – the old analogue telly is ceased here, I can also use this as a extra monitor.
I am lucky enough not to have caned my ears so have good hearing for my age and been able to afford some reasonable sound equipment (I bought a load last year as part of a process of making peace with the Japanese for invading my ancestors country in the war. For this reason I usually avoid the DAB broadcasts – various complex technical reasons mean the sound is trashed by this system. if you are listening on a computer then maybe the quality is better but if I’m going to go to the trouble of turning on a computer then I’d listen to partyvibe or another similar online station. Our new system transmits double the quality of all BBC stations and more than even Radio 3 (which gets the best quality of them or a infinite quantity of old men with beards whinge at them. Auntie has respect them used to turn up on BBC2 at random hours to teach folk hard maths – and they are the sort what listen to R3 and will go to the trouble of sending a letter to London/Manchester explaining why the sound quality is shit) maybe they still do.
May 23, 2012 at 11:57 pm #1253615Don’t really watch TV. I might put the radio on late night (more so on weekends) for electronic music if there is no personal music to listen to.. (or it’s a load of shit like usual).
May 24, 2012 at 12:01 am #1253613which stations? Is there still a pirate on 87.5 MHz in SE England?
May 24, 2012 at 12:01 am #1253616i like the radio a lot from thursday onwards too as thats when in the evening there is the 6 mix which is pretty good, lemon jelly was on the other week which was pretty cool, and all the dance music kicks on more…..
May 24, 2012 at 12:03 am #1253617Are there any pirate stations in the south west at all?

there may be though its probably still Bristol area Ofcom and unlike London they have the time and resources to track pirates, plus the engineers of licensed stations help the authorities locate them. The BBC has a entire unit for this based outside Reading in SE England, which their spin doctors are very cagey about admitting even exists (in spite of openly admitting to spying on foreign stations from the same place). Bear in mind also what goes on at Cheltenham. all these places can and do talk to one another.
Pirates outside London usually turn up at 87.5 (as this is not officially a broadcast frequency in the UK so tends not to get allocated) or from 105-108 if this hasn’t been taken up by community stations.
worth scanning this “dog-end” of the band anyway as you may well have a community station what also broadcasts specialist dance music shows in the night like ours does. they are run by volunteers and often don’t advertise themselves that much. (reminds me I filled in the volunteer form for our local and should check if they got it, have a nasty feeling they are running a skeleton crew of IT/engineering staff as many disappeared when BT bangalored loads of jobs)
