Anyone swing poi or staff etc? I’ve had my poi about four months and just making my staffs, thought i’d see if anyone else got some moves for me, so far i’m working on a four beat thread-the-needle, weave behind my back, five beat weave etc.
November 29, 2004 at 11:51 am #1063076i was at a party on a beach a few yars back. the sun was just below the horizon turning the sky purple, the music was excellent, everybody was feeling cool and there was a fire eater with a massive beard perched up on a the edge of the cliff.
Poor bloke managed to set fire to his expansive beard and dived into the sea to put it out. Except the tide had gone out. He landed head first in hard wet sand. His flames went out leaving him with a cartoonish blackened face with only the whites of his eyes showing.
I laughed.
sorry for the highjack MKP…
November 29, 2004 at 11:57 am #1063066AnonymousNo bother, it is a fantastic image!
November 29, 2004 at 6:01 pm #1063072Anonymoushi ya im el and i swing fire poi and glow poi , i have some strobe poi and they are amazing i am 16 and have had practice poi since i was about ten i have been doing fire ones for about 8mnths. i have done quite a few little shows in varies places mainly festivals and freinds and family gatherings , i should really get my act together and learn some more moves but time has been flying by so quickly lately plus its cold . Its amazing too do them too techno or drum and base music with fire ones you get totally absorbed and become one with the firepoi , i have tried fire staff too first time i had a go with one was at this green man festival their was bout a group of 5 or 6 of us doing our tricks with fire a kind of display but more relaxed , i was so surprised at how many ppl came and had done it before , the amazing thing is like the rave vibe , when you meet other fire ppl there is a similar vibe an adrenaline rush or something i cant wait til next years festivals , any how i shall stop waffling on , bit of a long post , take care , play safe and warm firey glows will light ppls lives up for yet another year !!!! elxxx
December 8, 2004 at 2:34 am #1063070AnonymousNice one el. something so lush about fire poi and staff. ive used poi a bunch of times, and set my massive hair alight twice. it reeks. so i prefer staff, much less potential of wrapping it round your arm or whatevr.
gravity toys are amazing on shrooms or trips, as im sure y’all know, special el the welsh fire demon. the simple complexity is sooooooo absorbing. i would recomend any one who hasnt done it to give it a bash. ive never heard of serious burns before, but please no one tell me if they have, i dont care.
I love stakk, but my skills lie with Diablo (those sideways topps onna string, and i just got a flamer at the beginning of the summer. it is amazing, if a little girly compared to a big flaming stick, but if you have staff, poi an diablo at once, everyone trips out…guaranteed
January 21, 2005 at 11:48 am #1063067On the subject of poi/staff etc….
Anyone else in Brighton fancy meeting up to share and swop some new tricks? Have ads in the usual places but no-one ever seems to be arsed to actually meet up and get something going…
😡
February 14, 2005 at 3:17 pm #1063078I have some poi and sevil sticks but am crap at both, would love to meet up with someone that knows what they are doing! :p
February 14, 2005 at 4:43 pm #1063071Anonymousi recon this summer, me mike and cat are gonna have to get together and see what we can see!
i have a few diablo, but i prefer devil sticks coz theyre so trippy!
mates in bristol got proper sick at juggling, doin’ mills mess and the machine etc… any jugglers on here?
February 15, 2005 at 10:04 am #1063083hmm, just to butt in a little to this topic (with all due respect) i wouldnt call myself a proper juggler but i started playing around with poi a while back. the only thing is i have to teach myself so its pretty slow going when time does permit
the martial art i do also incorporates staff swinging so that will probably help
though i do have a serious question, several of my friends have said starting to do this at age 17/18 is too late in life… theyre not right ofcourse, but did anyone have problems with this if they started when they were older?
just curious
otherwise these little “toys” are awsome, and very unique ive found in each design
ah and i havent read through the whole thread so smack me if ive repeated someone else has said :pah and just remembered, MKP if you want to learn some tricks http://www.motsplace.com has some pretty good vids and tutorials for poi and staffs, some nice tricks, like windmills and so on
February 15, 2005 at 11:06 am #1063079Oooh dear, you all sound like you know what you’re doing with the poi, I bought them for fun a couple of years ago and can’t say I get them out that much! I would like to learn though but am unfortunatley still at the ‘bashing the poi on head’ stage! If some of you guys wanna hook up in brighton in the summer that would be wicked! 🙂

They are all good at it!
Practice will of course make people improve and you need a level of physical fitness; but this is a performing art rather than a competitive athletic activity.
Provided people have good hand-eye coordination to start with, I don’t see why they could not start at any age!
February 16, 2005 at 10:48 am #1063084yay! thanks Lighting, honestly this is quite a relief. Poi and staff are awsome to play around with, and the fact that its not competative makes it all the better.
funny cat, i know the hitting on the head stage sucks, im not all that good myself but if you dont get the chance to really get together with anyone, i found a site for the first time i looked poi up (you probably know it but just in case) http://www.homeofpoi.com/ Its got online lessons, the next best thing if you dont have someone to show you the moves, it still takes ages to learn though 😀February 16, 2005 at 11:05 am #1063080cool, I’ll check that website out, yeah it would be nice to meet up with some peeps and learn some moves! Where are you based? My boyf has one of those long staff things that he sets on fire which is pretty cool but it means there are loadsa burn holes on his clothes, he he he x

February 18, 2005 at 12:44 pm #1063074Hi all!
Yeah we have a little collective of us in Southend-on-Sea (& growing) of people who do poi, fire-poi, staff & other assorted ‘toys’.
It’s great, you do need to keep safe (get a fire extinguisher) & when using fire have someone keep an eye on you – if you catch your back alight you may not notice immediately. We’re all at different abilities & levels – it doesnt matter – you’ll always learn stuff when there’s a group of.
Funny Cat – we do come down to Brighton – used to go to Bedrock (John digweeds’ night – but that’s no more 🙁 ). But we do have friends down there, so when we’re going there next – we’ll PM you or find some way of letting you know – the beach in brighton great for poi-ing on.
Roll on the warmer weather & let the fires burn !
Oh – anyone in Southend area, get in touch if you want to meet up & spin some fire!
S*d swing yer pants – swing yer poi!!
P.L.U.R. to you all 😉
DaveFebruary 18, 2005 at 12:47 pm #1063082cool, def let me know if you’re comin to brighton, just PM me. I just wish the nice weather would hurry up and get here!! :p sweet

i have been doin poi since i was about ten , a freind of mines son is only 8 and he already spins fire staff. i dont think it matters what age you are but i think it is probably easier to learn when you are younger because it comes more naturally a and probably aswell because at say 8 yrs old you just do it till you get it right and dont care if you end up covered in bruises.
is anyone here going to the big green gathering this year ?
spin safe, rave and the sun will shine all summer so we will not be stuck in muddy fields , leave regrets behind you coz the past has gone , live for the moment and let the moment live on .
soz i just got carried away
happiness and fluffy vibes
