I’m looking to buy some studio headphones for producing music and DJing with. (producing music first and of utmost importance, DJing is just another thing I’ll be using them for eventually)
I’ve got a few ideas but wanted to hear what other people thought were good headphones for music production.
Thanks in advance. :weee:

Are they flat response ones for production? Or more geared for sounding good like hifi/dj ones?
July 17, 2012 at 3:55 am #1255946Mine are pretty good although they are no designed for music monitoring or what ever the kids call it these days. I also have a DSS headphone amp for if I need that extra power. I hardly use it though. If you get a decent pair that take usb i’ll lend it to you so you can see what you think of it.

Ta mate, although it’ll not be needed as my soundcard has a headphone pre amp built into it. It’s 1/4 inch jack anyway so wouldn’t be able to USB it up.

July 17, 2012 at 1:22 pm #1255951I have a pair of Sennheiser HD600s – I’d highly recommend them, although they’re fairly delicate and will break if you rag them too much (I’d never use them for DJing). Also they’re an open-back design, which means that although they sound incredible, they leak like a sieve so you can’t take them on the train/bus etc. But perfect for studio work – they’re used by a lot of professional mix engineers.

Yeah the Sennheisers were one of the one’s I was thinking about, wasn’t entirely sure what pair would be best though. N1 for that. I could always just get a trashy pair for DJing as as long as I can hear what I’m doing, and it’s not distorted, it doesn’t really have to sound perfect or anything.
I might get the 650’s as they got slightly lower freq response and a big part of why I’m getting them is for monitoring bass.
I’m not gonna get anything with as good quality sound that are closed am I? As I also wanted to use them to work at nighttime whilst other people are asleep.
July 17, 2012 at 1:37 pm #1255944that studiospares place had a whole brochure of various cans but I have no idea if they are any good or not.
this reminds me of a incident on the original VFR – there was this rastaman who did a show and did the full on dub poetry etc, with sound effects and all sorts (we found a bunch of them on a jingle machine),
now as the radio studio speakers will mute as mics are opened, producers monitor the show on headphones (my mate was producing at that point, he is now a studio manager at a popular recording studio in Reading).
the rasta wore a variety of chains/medallions around his neck like that map of Africa, pictures of Bob marley and other random items, one being a referees whistle. I thought nothing odd of it, as rastas normally wear that sort of stuff. Until to accentuate some tune, he put the mic fader up to 0db and then blew the whistle at full blast. It made my mates jump from their seats, activated the hard limiter on the TX chain and thereafter the rastaman’s whistle joined the DJ’s mobile phones in the quarantined/confiscated area until the show was finished and he was instructed to stick to the noises from the computer :laugh_at:

I’ve listened to both the HD600s and HD650s and don’t remember a great deal of difference. Some people I know actually prefer the sound of the 600s.
If you want decent closed-back headphones, apparently the Denon AH-D2000 are really good. Dave Rat, the FOH engineer for the Chilli Peppers did an extensive test of about 30 pairs on his blog to find the best headphones for live sound, and those came out top.
I have some Sennheiser HD25s for live sound/DJing, which sound alright and can take a pounding, but I’d probably give the Denons a go if I was buying now.
July 17, 2012 at 2:26 pm #1255968well i’ve got these ones and they’re really comfy…. the sound is quite good too
Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO Closed Dynamic Studio Headphones – 80 Ohm | DV247

Nice thanks … They look perfect!

They deffo got the flattest freq response as well.
The 650’s seem to loose a bit of the high end and high mids compared to the 600’s whilst gaining a little bass what makes the generally good flat response of the 600’s less flat for the 650’s.
July 17, 2012 at 2:31 pm #1255969… ooo pretty colours
