August 12, 2006 at 3:01 pm #1085969August 12, 2006 at 4:08 pm #1085945August 12, 2006 at 4:09 pm #1085894unfortunately at the moment I only have some kitten pics of my own cat (which stayed behind in Reading with my sister when I left) and they are on conventional photo format… I had to take these with a long lens on an old Soviet SLR…
it is actually nearly impossible to photograph this animal!
If you approach him with any sort of photographic, video or recording equipment he will either run away or spin round so you can’t get a clear shot of him.
Even though he enjoys eating a lot you can’t even bribe him with food; he will walk away from his food bowl if you have a camera. He is (I think) part Siamese and mews a lot but will even stop mewing if you have audio recording equipment…
He is the most surveillance-aware cat I have ever known – perhaps he has learnt it from me in the days I when was more involved with various clandestine activities… 🙂

August 14, 2006 at 12:02 am #1085925on the subject of cats i gotta say, i say i saw a massive group of ferals in my village the other day a mother with about 8 different youngsters. Its a shame though cause i already know the destruction they can cause. Why cant people get dogs or if they get a cat dont be twats and throw it out so it becomes feral. The true answer is people are barstards:cry:

over 100,000 stray dogs were found dumped in the UK last year; this is nearly one stray dog for every person in Ipswich. people get dogs as a “living burglar alarm” or a “fashion accessory” and seem to forget they are dependent on the host family (TBH I think they are almost as much responsibility as having a kid although their education costs less).
feral cats can be caught and neutered to keep the populations under control; or kittens can be tamed (my own cat was a semi-feral farm cat). I’ve even known local OAPs to catch them and keep them as pets (how they do this I don’t know as ferals are usually quite wild!)
If they are causing a problem or you are concerned about their welfare contact the Cats Protection or your local animal protection charity.
however a group of “ferals” in a close knit community (particularly if they can wander safely away from traffic hazards) can often actually be a bunch of “legitimate” pet cats gathered in a group that have grown up together (in the same way that youths on a street corner are viewed with suspicion) – or farm cats which are encouraged to safeguard farms from raids by rodents and lagomorphs (rabbits) – such as the colony that GoodDog has seen.
Cats are mistakenly thought of as solitary animals when in fact they have some complex social structures and group activity; the nature of which has only just been discovered recently.
August 14, 2006 at 5:08 pm #1085928you befriend a feral cat with endless patience:
depending on how bad they are you may need to trap them initially
you tame tham by gradually increasing contact with the cat
and this can be done by: [untrapped cats]putting food out at a regular time every day till they come every day to eat [takes about 3 weeks usually]
then you sit where they can see you when they are eating but with a lot of distance between you and them so they dont feel threatened and sit still while they are eating until they are gone
after maybe five days decrease the distance by a yard or so [if the cat is too freaked out back off again] and repeat until it gets used to this
go on until you are just out of touching range of the cat and stop there for a week or sowait until its finished eating at that point and quietly call out to it – it may come to you; from there you just gradually increase contact with it until it accepts physical contact comfortably [this could still take weeks BTW]
then if you want to encourage it into the house you can gradually move its food nearer to the door until it is coming in [ dont try to shut it in as soon as it comes in as it may undo weeks of good work :groucho:]
if you have had to resort to trapping the cats then the system is similar but i would keep them shut in a room and start as far across the room as you can get until you can handle them enough to pet them and check them for injuries
tips to remember:
to a cat you look like a giant so get down on the floor [try this from a cats point of view…]
sit very still and quiet and make no sudden moves
DO NOT make eye contact – to a cat this is an act of aggression and it will probably run away and hide [conversely if you are allergic to cats stare at them fixedly and they probably wont come near you]
be prepared to spend months on this project – if you rush it you will end up putting yourself back to the start or further back still:hopeless:
let the cat come to you, dont lunge for it – it may take ages but believe me it is faster in the long run:groucho:
dont expect miracles – a feral cat may always remain a little wild but it is part of their charm IMO
August 14, 2006 at 7:46 pm #1085893Seeing all these pictures of sweet pets reminds me how much I want to get a kitten…
