Maybe I should point out I worked in a tenancy unit (ages 18+) so I was the one putting up with it 24 hours a day and the parents only had to deal with their children for a few hours every other weekend or less frequently than that. Sounds horrible but the understandable truth is the family often spend so much time frustrated with the child in its youth that if or when they finally move out it’s like having your life back and you’ll often see families try and detach themselves as much as they think the child can handle so they can get back to living their own lives. Now I wouldn’t have a problem with this is they didn’t drop by every month to tell me I’m not doing my job properly because they’re unable to accept their child’s transition from childhood to adulthood.
Edit: In no way having a personal go at you there Mezz, just expressing my feelings that linked on to your comment
I agree… I used to take care of PEople with disablities from one end of the spectrum to the next. These CHildren/adults were anywhere from 15 to 30….. And In a years time I never saw any of their parents come Visit them…. EVER… But it always came down to everything being our fault. WHich is why 99 percent of us working there lost our jobs. We would make a complaint about ANYTHING Going on and the parents would say Its our fault. (ex. When someone becomes unstable or violent) We are not allowed to Do anything but call the parents .. When those calls arnt returned and you make any decision…. ITs never the right one…The kids here didnt ever go home they had a room to sleep piss and eat… And their parents were ok with this…. Thats not living thats a FUcking cage for people to leave their responsiblities on others… Do not get me wrong… I know Plenty of people who take Care of their disabled kids… and I give them a standing ovation… Its just that not every parent is with their kids all the time…

Yes ok things don’t make sense and they botched the investigation, but please lets leave the IT WAS HOLOGRAMATIC PLANEZZ, alone.
For the record, I do not believe any of the stories about 9/11. Unless I have 100% proof I don’t believe it. So in my books the whole thing is a mystery.

This does my fucking head in man, but unfortunately, when most TV shows (especially fucking reality shows) are full of drunk, moronic slags, they think that’s how they have to act.
this (as well as intelligent folk dumbing themselves down), the competitive nature of youth social interactions and booze and drugs added to the mix is why they genuinely need at least 10 coppers to nanny Ipswich town centre every weekend to stop people actually getting hurt and killed, and why even though its now by no means a dangerous place there is an unfriendly atmosphere across the town…

I feel extremely ignorant having to ask this but I’m guessing without the NHS or equivalent in the US those kids wouldn’t receive the same sort of funding as here in the UK. Do the parents have to pay what ever care provided from their own pocket?
Over here such conditions are highly unlikely because people with Autism get tax payers money thrown at them left, right at centre to piss away on what ever they please. Most that I have known are not only given enough for their daily living and any specialist needs they may have, but also have thousands in the bank as well as a nice new car to be driven around in. In my opinion if they have no way of offering anything back to society in terms of a skill for which they can be employed then they shouldn’t have more than they need

Especially in times of an economic recession.

Autism and Asperger syndrome was the very area I specialised in for 6 years. Also had previous experience in everything ranging from severe epilepsy to ADHD although obviously my knowledge of those areas is significantly less. Not looking to start an argument here mate but you’re wrong. I’m not saying the carer is the best judge either though, ideally it should be a collaboration between the 2 but unfortunately for obvious reasons the parent or family are far more likely to be over protective.
Also a key element to the behaviour of an individual with Autism is environment and the parents will often assume the individual will present challenging behaviour without actually allowing the child to experience it. Although their behaviour will often appear reserved and hesitant or even resistant to the unknown it’s a classic fault to assume people with Autism want to remain in familiar circumstances and inside their comfort zone but this is generally not true. Yes familiarity and predictability are fundamental in supporting these people but that doesn’t mean that’s all they crave. They will usually display an apparent preference for the known but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to explore the world and have new experiences. It’s not necessarily the new environment or activity they don’t like; it’s the uncertainty of what’s inside the building (potential sensory overload e.g. will it be too bright? A lot of people inside? etc.) or how do I complete this activity. I’m not saying you or your family necessarily would but I know a lot of families that would turn their tales and run at the first ‘no’ expressed by their child. If this has happened from an early age then half time it’s often simply a learnt response to something new and it isn’t necessarily reflecting how the child actually feels.
Especially the higher functioning one’s who are aware of their disability, often what they want more than anything is total integration into normal society. If you don’t push them how will they ever achieve?
Im not going to get into a argument on specifics because it’s all very personal and I doubt my sis wouldnt like me posting much detail about it in a public forum, but I will say the so called support workers and medical professionals round our way are worse than useless, the only good support is the special school my nephew goes to where the teachers are top notch. It took over 3 1/2 years just to get him diagnosed, doctors in the first few years made out that he was just slow learning to walk, talk & use the toilet, and made my sis feel like it was all her fault and she shouldnt be bothering them with it, she’s had to fight to get everything from his meds to school placement to help modifying the house. The fucking jobsworth social busybodies I’ve encountered just want to tick boxes, fill in forms and talk in their softly softly PC BS ways that achieve nothing, the one in particular was lucky I didnt smash in his smug self satisfied face.
On people who put their disabled children in to care, well I wont judge them, it’s bloody hard work, draining physically, mentally & financially, and never ends so I can fully understand why some cant cope, but luckily for my Nephew we had shitty upbringing which makes my sis even more determined to make sure her kids have the very best unbringing possible no matter the cost to herself.

Like I already said, most of the decent support workers who both know what they’re doing and work consistently and sincerely don’t last long because of the shitty politics and other support staff that can’t or don’t do the job properly because they’re more focused on a personal agenda
