I always thought that pikey was used specifically for the bad type of travellers, and not meant as a generalisation of the whole different types of travellers.

Its strange hoe It was changed into something bad along the way. A bit like a reverse of the situation today of people using the word nigger to their mates inplace of brother, or mate ect.

I think Its important though to know the intentions of someone using the word. I doubt many people knew It was orginally a collective term. A bit like the word chav used to be for people in trackys ect, but now seems to involve a whole lifestyle too, which is unfair to the people who just like wearing trackys.
