May 25, 2006 at 4:53 pm #1074907we owned ariston belt drives [for 4 years approx]
and now we have technics 1210 mk2swhile the belt drives werent as nice as the technics are, you learn to cope and they are well cheaper [when you get a better deck its like moving from driving a mini to a good saloon]
we took the belt drives out to free parties and they handled itit will depend how serious you are and how much experience you have
the most common and widely proclaimed decks are the technics and they are pretty tough
[we have ours flightcased which is essential IMO if you want them to go anywhere as it saves stress to the owner and damage to the decks]if you can get well looked after technics 2nd hand for the money it may be the best investment as you will learn on the standard equipment in use;
on the other hand if you cant look around at what is locally available and be cheeky and ask to try them
[if the sales staff think you are serious about buying they should be prepared to let you try them]the disadvantage of a belt drive WRT direct drive is that it will be very hard to scratch on the belt drives; for scratching you will need a direct drive model [direct drive belt are driven by generating an electromagnetic field inside the deck which by varying its strength will turn the platter at different speeds
ok i am going to stop here
read this and ask me questions/ tell me what you want them for specifically as this will affect the rest of any advice i give you:crazy_fre:crazy_fre:crazy_fre:horay:
May 29, 2006 at 3:43 pm #1074901definitely go second hand, although their is a little more risk, ie the decks are more likely to break etc…, it means you can get alot more for your money, i got my decks for 215 including mixer, whcih is very good considering they were about 350 each 2 years ago.

sorry for late response. been away since fri and no access to net since
basically there just gonna be in me room prob running thru my stereo . iv bin learning the ropes on me mates beltdrives ( effing belt drives!! ) which IMO are hard as f*** to learn on as keep jumping speeding up etc so surely if u can mix on belts u shud be ok with direct??? but thas it basically just for me to potter about on.
every 1 seems to be like ‘its got to technics man’ but i dont want to swan away a load of dolla if not 100% necercery ( just a tightwad really )

i would agree that beltdrives are good to potter about on;
we had them for a ages and getting technics just made mixing a walk in the park; if you can mix on beltdrives there will be short [very short] getting used to technics period and then you will be laughing all the way to the mixer:bigsmile::bigsmile::bigsmile:
if you can mix well on the belts you will be fine on direct drives; belt drives require more subtle motor control and delicate mixing than technics :bigsmile::bigsmile:

May 30, 2006 at 4:01 pm #1074904yer i really dont understand why they make belt drives supose they alot cheaper to make ?? any way DirectDrive here i come:surprised
May 30, 2006 at 4:11 pm #1074910stax wrote:yer i really dont understand why they make belt drives supose they alot cheaper to make ?? any way DirectDrive here i come:surprisedbelt drives are driven by a motor which you can buy as a manufactured part and a belt linking this to the spindle = cheap to make
directdrive are driven using electromagnets and magnetic platters; the catch here is that the electromagnetic bits are patented by the the companies, like technics, that invented them so you essentially have to reinvent the mechanism because buying them is to expensive …:crazy_fre:crazy_fre:crazy_fre
and lets face it everyone knows which the standard deck is dont they?:crazy_fre:crazy_fre:crazy_fre
May 30, 2006 at 4:15 pm #1074899yeah, belt drives are way cheaper as they have smaller motors..
anyone know what the numark direct drives are like? thinking of getting a set of decks in the next few months, can’t afford technics though..

excellent; nothing is more important to a band than a good drummer and that should give you an ear for mixing
looking forward to it:horay::horay::horay:
