bored shitless so i thought id get my decks out and give them a whirl, but im completely clueless with the technical stuff so i cant get them set up properly

ive got 2 decks, a mixer and then seperate speakers and sub

the slots on my speaker are:

      out to r speaker
      sub out
      audio in

      slots on mixer are:

      MAIN OUT: [MASTER L + R], [TAPE L + R]
      EFFECTS: [SEND L + R], [RETURN L + R]
      INPUT 1: [CD L + R] [PHONO L + R]
      INPUT 2: [CD L + R] [PHONO L + R]

both of the inputs on the mixer have a button to press to select either phono or line. and then on the face of the mixer there is a switch for input selector to be phono or cd

the wires i have at my disposal are a cable with a red and white connector coming out of my decks
a wire to hook my right speaker to the left speaker (left speaker has the power)
a wire with red and white connectors at either end
a wire with red and white connectors at one end and a headphone slot connector at the other

apologies if im not explaining this very well but if anyone could explain to me how to set this up (preferably as if speaking to a retard) it would be greatly appreciated. safe

You do have an amp right? You just say speaker and don’t mention amps??

I assume the decks are vinyl decks and not CDJs..

the red and white wires from your decks go to the PHONO inputs of the mixer for INPUT 1 and 2. If there is a black wire as well that goes to a GROUND connection which is usually a metal knurled screw connected to the frame of the mixer (this keeps away hum)

Set the mixer controls to PHONO for everything (or you will not hear any sound)

Main out MASTER L+R go into the AUDIO IN on the active speakers. Depending on what this connection is you will either need to use the phono lead or the phono to 3.5mm stereo lead.

Make sure the speakers are both connected and power is on and this should all work.

thanks man ive got it set up exactly like this but im not hearing anything through the speakers. on my mixer there is a thing called ‘monitor selector’ with buttons for channel 1, channel 2, and master. and it comes through on the headphones when ive got channel 1 or 2 selected.. but not when its just on master

Right, what volume knobs do you have? and have you got the switches set to input not phono?

check that the faders are up for the master volume control, and that your channel faders are up and the position of the crossfader or any crosssfade assign buttons (if you have them) are not set to something strange

Also are the active speakers working correct?

either plug in a laptop or device you know creates good sound, or carefully set the volume of the speakers to something low (but enough to hear), then touch the tip of the 3.5mm plug or phono plug connected to the audio input of the active speakers. You should hear a hum, which proves that the amp is working.

okay so it seems that theres something wrong with one of the turntables, ive got the both set up now exactly as GL said but the one turntable is only playing through the headphones but the other is coming through the speakers aswell as the headphones – not sure why, but i can settle for this atleast now i can dig up some old vinyls and have a listen

thanks for the help guys and sorry again i really dont have a clue about this stuff

is there a crossfader on the mixer? a fault in this might create the problem you mention.

or swap the “faulty” turntable to the channel that works. That way you isolate whether the turntable is kaputt, or some part of the mixer circuitry.

ah yeah it is a problem with the crossfader i think i switched the ‘faulty’ one into the working channel and it plays through, but when i move the cross fader the sound crackles a bit

the crackle is a common mixer issue. I wish I could be there now, i want to wire you up. hmmmm

sometimes you can clean out the worst of the crap with Isopropyl alcohol

                                                  6130011000 – AMBERSIL – AMBERSIL IPA, 400ML | Farnell United Kingdom

and then lubricate the crossfader with this stuff..

                                                  SUPER SERVISOL 10 – SERVISOL – CLEANER, SWITCH/CONTACT, 200ML | Farnell United Kingdom

but these are not usually the things you have at home (well I actually do have a half litre can of isopropyl in the downstairs cupboard, but the switch cleaner is in my desk drawer at the radio station 2 miles away)

unfortunately mixers tend to get hammered and if they are being used in places where people smoke they fill up with crap even quicker…
