I’m stuck, I need to make some money but I don’t know how to. I know that there are a lot of imaginative and creative people who use this site so I’m hoping you can help.
I have decided to go and live in France for a bit but I’m finding it very difficult to get any work. I went to the job centre a few days ago and they basically told me that I should go back to England.
The elections are coming up and it looks as if the guy who is going to get the job of president is going to make it even harder for immigrants in France.
I need to come up with a way of legally making money whilst avoiding the bureaucracy. There is no way that I’m going to get a job working for a French employer so I either need to find a foreign, non-biased employer, or do something on my own.
I’ve applied to a couple of British and American tour operators but even if they offer me work, it will only be seasonal.
I’d really appreciate any thoughts or ideas coz I’m running out of money fast.March 4, 2007 at 11:04 pm #1100757well if it has to be completely legit (i think dealing punishments in france are way strict) then maybe something like your own business, selling something you are knowledgeable about maybe, like rare records or rigs, something to do with parties even. is this a long term or short term job? would you not be able to get a job as taxi driver or something?

@AJS:I don’t know where you are in France, but if you let me know what your skills are,we may go further…About the eventual new immigration laws, don’t worry too much,as you come from E.U. and not from Asia or Africa…

March 7, 2007 at 5:15 pm #1100759I’m living in Montpellier, way down south.
I had my first job offer today. PGL have offered me a job as a sailing instructor. It’s only for the summer and it doesn’t pay very much but they will put me up (in a tent) and feed me.
Hopefully I’ll be able to find something permanent by the end of summer. I might even be able to speak a bit of French by then which should help.
I’ll look into doing some fruit picking too. There are vinyards everywhere down here so it should be quite easy to find something.
Thanks for your ideas.

March 8, 2007 at 12:02 pm #1100760Don’t think I’ll get much for my organs. They’ll be all shrivelled up and toxic by now.

have you tried O’Carolans (next to the carre st anne), Fitz Patrick’s (behind the chamber of commerce (close to place de la comedie) or the Irish Tavern (in Beaux Arts)?
i worked for the family who run those 3 places. If you don’t speak much french, that’s about you’re only option in the town
that or go to work for eurocamp, who pay you about £2 / hour
March 13, 2007 at 9:44 am #1100761I do know Fitz Patrick’s. I’ve been there a few times. Next time I will ask them about bar work as they all seem to speak pretty good English.
I had a very pleasant conversation with one of the girls at the jobcentre yesterday too after reading this…
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/ClaimingBenefit/DG_10035686It seems that I’m entitled to claim benefits from the UK even while I’m living elsewhere in Europe. Nice.
I am tempted by the Eurocamp thing too. It won’t be too hard and it will get me out in the sun. They pay well bellow the minimum wage but accomodation and food are provided too.
Cheers for all your ideas. They’re well appreciated.
