The “EMX-1’s pattern data, song data, and global data” IS the MIDI data. It’s a different format but it’s still the same thing that would be saved if it was MIDI just in a different format, if it was a .MID file then it’s MIDI in the correct format for MIDI as .MID is a universal MIDI file! Afaik the smart card thing is only for saving your pattens/song Data (note on/off data and volume etc., exactly like midi does) and general settings to make more space on the emx and or back stuff up and can only be used in emx’s (and possibly other korg products) anyway.
May 9, 2012 at 10:19 am #1252792TBH if its the kind of smartcard I think it is it would be unlikely to be able to store much in the way of modern high quality audio data
this is the low cost soundcard – should do the job (will need the adaptors probably 6.35mm jack to phono, not sure what the Korg output is..)
@poly – if you are wanting to get into production might be worth investing in a whole mixer setup etc as they are way cheap these days..
May 9, 2012 at 4:58 pm #1252816Hmmm… wonder if there are any Hack tools to convert the data? Probably are but Mac versions unlikely…

It doesn’t work like that unfortunately.

What, you don’t use Hacktools? Ever? I get a sense of Deja Moo – the feeling I have smelt that bullshit before. Anyway, nothing else to add to this saga, I’m off.

No this has nothing to do with anything I do, I’m explaining that there’s no way of turning the data on that card into an audio wave bar using the korg (at least not in a way that would sound the same, if at all possible, via some other midi device/program using separate synths which obviously would not sound like the korg). The memory card, it’s stored data and actual audio don’t work like that.
May 10, 2012 at 1:17 am #1252802Let me explain …
MIDI just like the data saved on the memory card is just a series of values telling the synth (the korg emx in this case) what note to play and when, what instrument to use for each part, all the filter automatons ect ect.
As soon as you take it out of the korg it looses the ability to make the sounds the korg makes as it’s just triggering the korg to make sounds rather then making any sounds it’s self. I think GL akined MIDI to sheet music somewhere; It holds all the information to play a song, but doesn’t actually play the song it’s self. So if for example you have a trumpet part in sheet music, but then take it away from the trumpet player and give it to a saxophone player, then it’ll sound different as it’s not the same instrument playing it, even though it’s the same notes etc. This is how MIDI works.
Audio data is a waveform depicting sound frequencies across the audible sound spectrum. An analogue or digital representation of the actual sound it’s self.
MIDI tells the korg what to play, the korg plays it and then makes audio.
If you’re talking about hacking the korg so it can save audio data onto the card then you’d need to take the thing apart and totally rewire it and add other circuits etc., make sure the korg can take much bigger memory cards, possably replacing the entire card reader it’s self, then make the software/hack yourself so it’s custom designed for the electrical reworking you’ve done to the korg, and to be honest you’d have to be a bloody good electrical engineer/PCB designer/computer programer and probably another one or two skill sets to do it.
It’d be much easier to just find something decent to record it on out of the normal stereo output.
May 12, 2012 at 5:26 am #1252818That’s a damn sight clearer than the manual, page 82;-
Quote:Transmission
Here’s how to transmit an EMX-1 system exclusive
data dump (pattern, song, or global mode settings)
from MIDI OUT to a connected MIDI data filer or
computerIt seems to suggest you CAN dump sample data via the Midi port, and even out to a Smart Media card – and in fact, you can’t.
BUT… if you were to take the Midi data, input that into a Mac, run a sequencer program and load the data – you could actually change the instrument values and tweak the track much more easily than on the Korg EMX-1.
So I think I can see WHY p0ly wants to do this – got a nice track, sounds good on the Korg, not very flexible to load and save different samples onto the instruments on the Korg – much easier to mess about on a computer (in this case, a Mac).
Probably not that difficult to fit a Hack BIOS inside the Korg but… nah, you’re right. Modding the Korg isn’t what p0ly was asking for.
