February 5, 2008 at 2:27 pm #1154533TBH I don’t think there is that much difference between North and South these days, the North does have them big pubs but they have been around for 30+ years and alcohol is cheap down here as well.
I don’t go into town much, mind you only certain pubs will serve me because I look young and haven’t got photo ID (I don’t drive and passport expired ages ago and its too valuable to carry around if you’re on the piss) – other than raves I tend to go to strange places in the outskirts of mid suffolk or would rather visit friends houses.. I like a drink but don’t go looking for trouble, but being non-white sadly its easy enough to find it these days with race relations as bad as they were in the 80s..
Its a big shame to hear those tales about Norwich and the UEA
I know the promoters of those nights don’t want that sort of shit to happen but they have to accept the drinking crowd to pay the venue expenses..
If they are too “drug friendly” the Uni will stop the nights as the uni’s brand image (particularly to foreign students) is supposed to be “anti drugs”
Also normal society is equally pissed off and feels that there is a solution to reducing this violence – by locking down the nightlife and returning the licensing hours back to midnight or 1am – apart from venues in heavily CCTV controlled areas, which have extra drinks costs because the cops and council increase the licens fees to claw back the costs.
As soon as the cost of dealing with the problems (NHS costs, police overtime, court costs) outstrips the contribution to the economy that nightlife makes, the authorities will start closing venues. Already Zest has gone in my town because people coudln’t control themselves and eventually brought firearms into the equation..
This clampdown on nightlife is already happening in Suffolk and Essex..

February 5, 2008 at 2:46 pm #1154534the sad thing is those wannabes have the power to do a lot of damage these days, the whole nightlife/youth culture is judged by their activities.
Our “freedom” to have late night venues is very recent. In most areas outside London there weren’t any late licenses until 1989 or so.
This freedom can easily be taken away if the rest of society (particularly the older people with houses and money who have power) feel it is being abused.

February 5, 2008 at 2:48 pm #1154529Anonymousi’ve had some realy great nights in ‘rough’ towns and bars. i’ve had some shit nights in techno & d&b clubs. in fact i find d&b nights more intimidating than if i went to say walkabouts in oldham on a sat night. i can have a good night werever i go its about the company your with and what atitude you go out with.

February 5, 2008 at 2:58 pm #1154535Although I used to go to very much the same places as Jonnyquest did (actually I lived in Eltham) and never had much trouble – the problem though is when trouble does kick off its a lot nastier these days, and even if you are not involved it has a major impact.
All the authorities from the Police through to the NHS are closely scrutinising all the trouble that happens in towns/cities – they have records etc of everything nowadays, from footage of the initial fight to the cops and hospital records. Every few months the authorities gather up all this data and work out where the “flashpoints” are. This is used to ensure cops/ambulances are put in certain areas (which is why you often see ambulances “lurking around doing nothing” in town late at night).
If areas have too many flashpoints venue managers are told in no uncertain terms to clean up things or get closed down, and this is when the stuff like alcohol control zones, strict challenge 21 enforcement, random searches, sniffer dogs in town etc start happening.
I was back in Reading over Christmas and cops were literally cordoning off the street so the only way to one bit of the city was to walk through an area where there was uniform cops, sniffer dogs and it was under direct view of CCTV. Total control and surveillance in operation..
