ok i’ve applied for a lifeguarding course…pretty good pay, they do all the training for you so no complaints, only worrying thing is that my m8s say its really hard to pass the course?!?!?!
they said somethin like ”oh you have to do 10 lenghts of the pool in a certain time!” not being funny but i won’t be able to do that, i’m a ok swimmer but not a great swimmer, so i hope nothing like that comes up!
has anybody done/been a lifeguard at a local swimming center before? can anyone enlighten me with what the course is like and stuff?

February 19, 2008 at 9:51 am #1155570i used to be a lifeguard when i was about 16 til about 20. The course is quite hard and there is quite a lot to remember and you’ve got to be a fairly strong swimmer. Just get a bit of practice in between training sessions and your fitness should increase pretty quick tho.
If you like sitting around on your arse in the warm then the jobs a goodun too!

February 21, 2008 at 2:45 pm #1155572My missus is a level 2 swimming instructor, and is considering getting her lifeguard cos then we could travel anywhere in europe and she could run the swimming pool. Instructor is really the one to get but the course trebled in price last year, not sure about the lifeguard one though.
She has been offered £17 per hour at private pools. By the way you dont have to be able to swim to become an instructor, but it helps (especially if you want people to employ you, as an instructor who cant swim wouldbe a bit of a joke in my eyes)By the way, Gimme back my avatar.
You just cant leave anything laying around these days as some buggar pilfers it!February 21, 2008 at 2:45 pm #1212963My missus is a level 2 swimming instructor, and is considering getting her lifeguard cos then we could travel anywhere in europe and she could run the swimming pool. yeah well my brother works at center parcs and he simply said ”all they ask of you is to swim to one end of the pool and back in a reasonable time, after that, you’ve gotta do some CPR and first aid training incase”, and i guess the good thing is that they pay for you to do the course which is a bonus, just nervous about going there and doing it, but i suppose it will be better once i’ve got it over and done with!!

February 21, 2008 at 3:58 pm #1155573That sounds like an internal centerparcs only qualification, i was on about ASA (amateur swimming association) which can be used anywhere in europe but you have to pay yourself and they are quite expensive courses now.
With the one your on about you cant lose so just go and do it.
Good luck dudeP.S. Oaty Crumblies – FTW

February 23, 2008 at 11:34 am #1155576well they asked me to swim what seemed like a reasonabily small pool, 8 lenghts in 5 minutes, was surprisingly hard considering i haven’t excercised/swam in ages. i done it in 5:30, so they said i can get my fitness up and try again in a few weeks…………….but meh…………….dunno whether it’s worth all the trouble

go for some runs, do some press up/sit ups it will all help your fitness. you’ve only got to shave just of 3 seconds of each length. i reckon you should be able to do it if you get fitter in the next few weeks/month…

you dont need to swim to get your fitness up, go for runs, do some push ups to build the strenth up in your arms, im sure you can shave 30 secs off
