Any one have any experiance with these? I’m looking to get a pair this week. :weee:
June 29, 2010 at 4:38 pm #1227365your have to tell me what it is first? trainers or some kind of mixer? (best guesses)
June 29, 2010 at 4:51 pm #1227343a little too bassy i think, id probs just get one of the smaller versions. sound much clearer for standard bedroom use, definitely nicer at lower volumes, nice to mix on too.
my mates 8’s went thru the floor like a bitch, loads of bass downstairs, even at low volumes.
June 29, 2010 at 6:35 pm #1227347hmm i’ve heard a few people say that .. I’m going to be using them for producing drum and bass so i do need the low freq’s but i don’t want them to be coloured as my bass will be weak played through other systems if i’m mixing a track on speakers with a little too much bass, alltho I don’t wanna go the otehr way either and have too much bass if my speakes don’t have enough and i have to crank the low freq’s up too much to hear them on the monitors.
June 29, 2010 at 6:37 pm #1227348I’m getting isolator pads with them so the bass going through the floor shouldn’t be too much of a problem (i hope) … it’s just the quality of sound and flat responce i’m really looking into.
June 29, 2010 at 7:31 pm #1227349Oh and for 1984 they are studio monitors …

na mate thats a speaker, this is a monitor
ps when does a speaker become a monitor? I am so confused you have no idea.
June 29, 2010 at 7:59 pm #1227341both 1984 and Daftfader are correct, but the confusion is because the term “monitor” is an abbreviated term of “monitoring equipment”
you have a “video monitor” – which you look at – either the display of your PC or video from a camera or a DVD or video server. and then you have “audio monitoring equipment” which you listen to – and this sends the sound to loudspeakers or the headphones.
so small loudspeakers in studios for the purposes of listening to the audio content that has been created are called “studio monitors”
in an AV setup such as video editing (or indeed most peoples multimedia PCs) you have both..

well that makes sense, I did suspect this was the case, what’s the difference between them and ordinary speakers?

Studio monitors aim at having a flat responce .. IE. no freqencys are reproduced louder or quiter than any others the whole way down the freqency range, so as to hear exactly what the music you are making sounds like.
Unlike hifi speakers what are noramly “coloured”.That means ,for example, the bass is tweaked to sound warmer/louder/punchier to be pleasing to the ear. Rather than to be an acurate representation of the music being played through them.
Studio monitors should show you what the music sounds like on the recording it’s self rather than how your hifi speakers would make that peticuler track sound. So when, after making a track, you play it back on noramal speakers you havn’t compensated for the altered responce of hifi speakers, resulting in lack of bass in the example i gave (bass tweaked to be louder) as you’ll make a tune so it sounds good on bassy speakers but it wount translate to other speakers well as you wouldn’t of put as much bass into your recording to compensate for the bass of the speakers. Resulting in not enough bass in the recording.

cheers man! I is learning! that makes sense, complex stuff all this!

BUMP
I’m making my purchase tomoz and am still thinking about the 8’s as i need that lower end even if it’s slightly coloured (I can allways compensate with the EQ if needed)

that was what I thought would be a good idea, as the speakers seem to be otherwise OK (although last time I dealt with active monitors was about 10 years ago)
do they even still make stand alone graphic equalisers these days or are they all DSP kit now?

do you mean hardware EQ’s by “stand alone”?
If you’re talking about Software EQ’s on the pc .. then i would imagin they would all be digital but i’ve not really looked into it tbh.
June 30, 2010 at 10:56 pm #1227344they one of the only maunfacturers that really makes anything that large, the casing itself is much larger than alot of other monitors, so dont sit as nicely in smaller spaces,
they are nice, and you wouldnt be dissapointed with them at all, but my mate always says he wishes he’d have saved a bit and got some smaller ones. after hearing both id go for the rp6’s. just dont put them on a weak shelf above a pair of technics like a mate did!
they’re more truthful, managable and clearer. the only time the rp’s are come into there own is when you wanna crank them, which isnt what monitors are for at the end of the day.
im chuffed with my alesis active mk2’s, cant see much point spending the extra unless your getting something really high end.
June 30, 2010 at 11:03 pm #1227345also isnt the idea of a montor that you dont ahve to eq or compensate at all,

yeah i understand this .. the only thing is I need the freq responce to go lower than 49Hz +/- 1.5 db like in the RP6’s as alot of the sub in my d+B will be hitting 40Hz or even less… RP8’s go down to 45 Hz +/-1.5 db and that’s the best i have seen for speakers of this price (I don’t want to spend more). I can’t see any other way of getting the low range i need other than the RP8’s with a little too much bass responce.
A sub is out of the question atm a. because of cash and b. because my room will not be able to handle one with out vibrating every thing in there making it sound more like a tractor engin rather than crisp sub bass and i can’t afford bass traps either and c. because they are a fucking pain to get in synk with the monitors properly as far as i can work out.
the next best pair (lowest freq) i’ve seen are the yamaha HS80M’s that go down to 42Hz +/- 10 db. I don’t think they will hit the lows as well as the RP8’s as you’re possably loosing 8.5 db’s at 45 Hz (assuming I’ve worked it out correctly and understand how freq responce is guaged)
Idealy I want more expensive monitors that go right down to the 30-40 Hz range …. but i just can’t afford them atm and need to get a pair of monitors within two weeks as I’m doing an exhibition in earls court and need them for that as well.
July 1, 2010 at 3:03 pm #1227361if your going to eq, make sure u dont cross xmax or they go boom

.i was just gonna EQ down on the lower freq’s from my pc … or is this not advisable due to quality or something?

cant imagine it would effect quality,
suppose if you need the extra bass response then their ideal, its just a little too much rumble sometimes, specially when listening to music like bands and that.
very good for house parties tho!
July 1, 2010 at 6:05 pm #1227356I’ve ordered a pair and some isolator pads .. should be here in 4-5 working days :weee:
Will let you know how i get on with them when they arive 😛
July 9, 2010 at 7:39 pm #1227357
Sound fucking wkd … !
I can see what people say about the bass being coloured a little … just have to compare how a track sounds on them and a few other speaks to get a grasp of what i’m aiming at it sounding like when i make tunes and i’ll be right as rain :weee:
(p.s. that’s not my visual monitor :P)
