This a new programme on tv starting on thurs 7th sept it reads as follows:
If your child is addicted to drugs and you’ve done everything humanly possible to help them and failed, what do you do ? American therapist Tracey Towner advocates “intervention therapy” – popular in the States – where the addict is confronted by those they love and issued an ultimatum. Heroin addicts Richard and Anna think they are filming a documentary about their addiction. What they don’t know is that their freinds and family are plotting to tell them on camera that they must either accept treatment or be banished forever. Before it is even aired, this programme has been criticised by some charities as exploitative. What unfolds when you watch, though, is a sad and emoitional tale where all involved have reached the end of the line. Will Towner’s brand of tough love work? Surely its worth a try.
me, i think its a good idea, an forces them to face their habit. can only be a positive, what does anyone else think ?
September 2, 2006 at 8:06 pm #1088352Me? I personally think it is a horrific idea
My sister wanted to do something similar to our mum,(not on tv but a “family intervention type thing”)
I believe if SHE ever wants to sort herself out she will, if not she wont
and ultimatley (what ever I feel or think it is HER choice)It is good to be honest and tell people what impact their addiction has on yourself but to do it on TV I personally think is nasty
The WHOLE thing about addiction is IF the addict wants to change they will but until they do they wont
and trying to ‘force’ someone to change with emotional blackmail will not work in the long run … it may in the short term but addiction is more than just ‘stopping’ the substance one uses and I believe you have to sort the reason you use in order to stop relapses occurng
PHEW (sorry for rant)
another bit of ‘cheap tv’

tankgirl puts it well
September 2, 2006 at 8:16 pm #1088343the only time I think cameras should be present for these sorts of experimental treatments should be for training of approved healthcare professionals.
All footage should be treated as “RESTRICTED” or even “CONFIDENTIAL” (or whatever protective markings NHS use for their patient records) and only made available within an approved training facility – it should not be made available to the general public and used for TV entertainment.
That goes for all the “supernanny” shows and the other similar things as well…
IMO it is the one time Ofcom should be flexing its muscles and introducing censorship, or at least dictating this sort of stuff should perhaps be on a subscription only digital channel for teaching hospitals etc.

September 3, 2006 at 12:54 pm #1088349i think its a bit unfair to the addicts – they are going to feel great being ganged up on like that :hopeless:
and no respect to their ‘friends’ and ‘family’ for doing it to them – if you only have the balls to say it cos a tv camera is there you are pathetic:you_crazy :you_crazy

I like this sentiment.
September 3, 2006 at 5:34 pm #1088350i have to agree with tank girl.if you try and give somthing like that up just to please others or because your bullied into it it just doesnt work,it may do short term but to truely give something up you have to want to give up for yourself before you think about what other people want.and once you want it for yourself the best thing freinds and family can do is be supportive and understanding not all gang up on you i think that would just make it worse in the long term.

all they’ll end up doing is adding feelings of guilt and create further alienation
