Does anyone play an instrument if so which?
im thinking of investing in a ukele, and/or acoustic guitar & banjo
would live to play really soulful music and sing along with it, so that will be a goal for me in the near future

Get the acoustic guitar first I would think, then move on to ukulele and banjo. The banjo can be quite difficult to play well! The acoustic (especially if you get a steel string) will be good for developing finger strength and calluses on the tips of your fingers. It’s also fairly versatile and will fit in with what you want to play.
April 11, 2013 at 10:31 pm #1271536I was gonna get it further down the line when I have more money to invest into an acoustic, and I want something small and easily moveable, don’t wanna walk round with a guitar on my back, acoustic will be for home use only
Your advice makes sense but I’m definitely getting a ukulele first

Fair enough. In that case it shouldn’t be too difficult to learn. Learn how to string a few chords together and you’re sorted.

Yeah I already learnt how to play a, c, e, f, g cords major and minor, I think that’s them anyways.. Learnt it in like an hour at my mates, was making a few decent random notes just stringing em together too, was really good. Can’t wait to be able to play it properly without looking at my hands and playing like second nature
April 11, 2013 at 10:45 pm #1271521the old guy what used to close down pirate radio stations for the Dutch Communications Ministry retired and decided to sit in his house and play banjo (he is quite good at it to be fair)

Nice one. It’s also good to learn scales too as that kind of knowledge can be applied to other instruments in future as well, and are good for knowing the relationships between notes and what sounds melodic vs. dissonant.

Bed time, will have a listen in the morning though, love listening to decent banjo players

Hmm, not sure what scales are? Likes going high and low pitch?Ahh yeah I see, I want to learn all the songs like; soul sister, over the rainbow, etc..! Man I love this genre ATM, so emotional lol

Scales are sets of musical notes ordered by fundamental frequency/pitch. So for example the “do re mi fa so la si do” that you probably learned at school corresponds to the C major scale.

Pretty much starting place, ending place, and mid place of a set of notes.
So, play a song in the wrong scale, it sounds out of tune.
Sheet music (music transposed onto a clef scale) always makes the scale plain, so musicians sound in tune (assuming their instruments are in tune).
That’s the real key – not so much learning an instrument as learning how the information is written, read, and communicated.
I’m really bad at reading music but I can sort of work out which notes are supposed to be there… more you practice, quicker and more fluent you get.
April 12, 2013 at 1:11 pm #1271556I got an original sunburst Fender Telecaster from the early 90s but I can’t play it. Gonna start this summer, super excited.
April 12, 2013 at 8:56 pm #1271547No offence LShak, but how is a ukulele soulful?
I would take everyone else’s advice and get a steel string electro-acoustic (so you can play amplified or use effects at a later time if you so wish. Also better if you want to record).
A guitar is going to be so much more versatile than the smaller stringed instruments that you mentioned and will be easier to play. Plus you will find much more accessible online tutorials for the guitar and have access for notation and tab for a great many more songs.

Yeah I would well reccomend guitar for the tablature available, that’s how I used to play. Probably a bad way to learn though but you get to play some nice riffs.
April 12, 2013 at 9:14 pm #1271540Hm I might consider it but ATM got my mind set on a ukulele, will dpribably get the ukulele but we will see closer to them time when I am to invest in one, other priorities first 🙂 thanks for tips and advice though, I definitely want an acoustic guitar thought too, not so mch electric though

it may not be in the traditional sense, but it has inherent comedy value. A while back I was wheeling my bike through a busy street in Ipswich and there was this hipster lad trying to look like Kurt Cobain and his two Asian friends either side of him trying to look rude, but instead of his guitar he was playing a ukelele (presumably for the same reason as Lshak as its less bulky to carry around). They were not unmusical but the whole sight was so surreal it was a good thing I was not riding my bike, or I would have fallen straight off it from laughing.
April 12, 2013 at 9:47 pm #1271548Can’t help but think about this fella when ever I hear or see a ukulele.

I’m thinking about doing a remake with a Linux based Ukelele Orchestra called “Re-installing Windows”.

Tin whistle – Wikipedia, the free encyclopediawe were skint when I was younger, so instruments weren’t on the agenda
I’d like to be able to play the piano like Ben folds, but I just don’t have the patience or inclination, its just a dream

Wow very talented, do you have a sound cloud? Did you use music as a hobby or a career goal?
