June 4, 2008 at 8:48 pm #1173729Aaaw it’s not dull, i’ve got major zoo cravings now lol.
Which zoo did you go hun?
They’ve got huuuuuuge tongues lolJune 4, 2008 at 8:53 pm #1173731Ahh just Banham zoo it’s near our house was only tenner to get in and to get up close with the Giraffes you had to pay an extra fiver but god it was well worth it.
June 4, 2008 at 9:27 pm #1173717hmmm
if they are your favourit animals why are you giving the zoo money to keep them caged?
not meaning to sound a dick at all, just interested in a debate about the rightness or wrongness of zoo’s i suppose!
June 4, 2008 at 9:45 pm #1173732No i see your point but idealy i wish all animals could be out in the wild and that we could see them in there natural habitats, to be honest Banham zoo do a lot of conservation work to help animals in the natural habbitats. lots of mamals are poached in africa for there fur im not at all saying that its right to keep animals in zoo’s. There are alot of species now that are extinct in the wild and if it wasn’t for zoo’s there more than likey not be any on the planet i guess they have there good and bad points.
June 5, 2008 at 5:46 pm #1173722I was under the impression that giraffes were huge, now i don’t want to be funny but huge they are not.
Or is that girl feeding them really really tall?
The mind boggles. Another case of what they teach you at school been absolute rubbish.
June 5, 2008 at 5:50 pm #1173723Aha, on closer inspection of the photos they are on a raised walkway and the giraffes are indeed quite tall.

There are two types of giraffe at Flamingo Land, the Reticulated and the Rothschilds. These are really quite similar, except the Rothschilds, which is the rarer of the two species, has fuzzier markings.
The giraffe’s natural habitat is open woodland and wooded grassland in sub-Saharan Africa. In the wild their average life span is between 10 and 15 years, but in captivity, where they have no predators and are less prone to disease, they can live up to 25 years.
Giraffe live in small herds with one dominant male. They are herbivores, spending much of the day grazing on thorny acacia trees, the males from the high branches, the females from the lower. The giraffe is the tallest mammal in the world; they can grow up to 19’ (5.7m) – that’s about the height of the gutter on a two-storey house! They can weigh up to 190 stones (1200 kilos)!
The natural predators of the giraffe young are lions, hyenas and leopards. The real enemy of the fully-grown giraffe is man, who hunts these majestic creatures to make tourist souvenirs.
There are no more vertebrae (small bones) in the neck of the giraffe than there are in yours!
A giraffe’s heart can pump up to 16 gallons (61 litres) of blood per minute!
Giraffe sleep standing up or lying down but for no more than 20 minutes at a time!!
