this is whats gonna happen to me soon…. 😥

it is shocking to think this is happening in England today in 2007, but I think the Yanks were doing this to people in the 80s (the workfare scheme)
I tried looking for a claimants’ union for Sheffield but all I could find was Sheffield Indymedia and some info on the usual sort of eco-type demos which you probably have read anyway..
I have a nasty feeling the claimants’ unions have mostly given up and people just end up going back to the soulless office jobs anyway (at least they still exist up north and haven’t been outsourced like in the South and East!)

June 21, 2007 at 4:08 pm #1113920I can wholey sympathise with you Cath – and yes it is awful – and people question why motivation can be seen as poor to ‘better’ ones self :you_crazy
when I did my training I recieved what is called a bursary – and it worked out £2 per hour, (for 3 years)
and we were expected to study, and work shifts and out of this pay our rent, food, bills and transport to where ever they would put us on ‘placement’ – which could be anywhere all over london and croyden.
Yes I agreed to do it – but it doesnt mean it wasnt difficult –

June 21, 2007 at 4:12 pm #1113923am on the ‘new deal’ at the moment i am a supply teaching assistant so have had temporary jobs in schools round sheffield, unfortunately i have been unable to find permanent full time work so the jobcentre have forced me to do work experinece (av yet to find out what it is yet) for 13 weeks, 30 hrs a week.
i have enrolled on a course starting in september for gaining a diploma in Teaching Assistant level 3, but the advisors at jobcentre say i cant do this course cos i have to do the work experience !! complete madness! I won’t get a qualification from what they want me to do.
av spoke to citizens advice bureau and other jobcentre advisors and even the ombudsman but no one can help! they just tell me its the law!
trying desperately to get full time work (in anything now) so that i dont have to do this work experience thing. need something before monday or i wont have the chance to look for work while working on ‘new deal’….

June 21, 2007 at 4:20 pm #1113914it is wholly daft that the DwP and DfES won’t even talk to one another to sort out a solution, (or just let you volunteer) as I’m sure that there is a shortage of teaching assistants and you’ve already passed the stuff like CRB and got the experience…
have you tried the usual temp agencies for office work? I’ve got the impression that a lot of private and public sector offices have moved recently from the South and East into Sheffield and are looking for workers..

am registered with a couple of education agencies in sheffield, found them useful at getting me work, hope something long term and permanent comes up tho…had an interview yesterday for a secondary school helping two pupils who love doing art but have poor social/behavioral skills. Sounds rewarding, just waiting to hear if i have the position….
Worked today as a supply teaching assistant in a ‘learning lab’ helping children who have SEN and other learning problems who have been kicked out their lessons or just cant sit in the classroom. Was rewarding , they mainly did creative stuff and we played games… one lad was making some amazing music using a computer program!:weee:

June 21, 2007 at 5:07 pm #1113928Bloody hell Cath As I’ve said before they’re w****rs! :bounce_fl
I’ll second what TG says as well, being a student nurse the bursary works out as much the same, working full time, studying on top all for a pittance, an yes we agree to do it but it doesn’t mean its easy.
I was angry at first then despaired that i’d ever manage but in the end had to make a choice. I thought I want this enough to put up with the bullshit then I’ll write my own ticket. Had some hard years but it’s been worth it.
Good luck mate :group_hug

June 21, 2007 at 5:13 pm #1113919the situation is really bad Cath.. I feel for you
is it A4E that run new deal in Sheffield? the DWP contract out the new deal work to private companies who don’t give a shit about whether you get a job you’re interested in, suits your skills an experience, has prospects or treats you fairly.. they just want you in any work so they can collect several thousand £s… about 5 years ago it was £3000 per person. they make a vast profit (out of tax payers money) making people miserable and screwing up their prospects of getting qualified and into work they will enjoy
it’s an outrage

thing is…the work experience is something i’ve been doing anyway…volunteering in schools and community arts projects working with children and young ppl…
the work experience wont be at a school cos the schools break up for summer soon…..
the jobcentre are just trying to put me in any job so that they can meet their targets and give the impression unemployment figures are being reduced.
