I’m wondering… If a neuron can be either ‘on’ or ‘off’ this represent a binary digit… So if we took the maximum denisty of neurons per cubic meter… Could we get rough estimate on how much ‘bits’ a brain could theoretically posses at a given instance?
December 21, 2012 at 7:29 pm #1264208I was thinking more shred up some books and jam them in your ears until your head is full.
December 21, 2012 at 7:30 pm #1264232Not all the brain is responsible for memory though. The hippocampus is, so if we knew how large this was in an average human, and how many neurons it possesed i guess we could get a really rough estimate.
Theoretically though it would differ from person to person a lot, or at least i imagine it would.December 21, 2012 at 9:26 pm #1264217I believe 2.5 petabyte is a rough estimate that most scientists bandy about but obviously the human brain doesn’t really work like a flash drive.
Memories themselves are subject to change over time depending on one’s perception and there are various filters, asscociations etc to consider.
How do you quantify a unit of human memory? What do you count as memory? It’s all very subjective because the brain does not just collect and store data like a computer.

That’s not how a neuron works. They don’t represent binary digits but rather they are “analogue.” The brain isn’t a complicated computer. It is much more complex than that.
December 22, 2012 at 5:27 am #1264226well yer hippo depends on how much sleep ya get.

I can’t sleep. Is this why I don’t have a hippopotamus?
December 22, 2012 at 5:53 am #1264221Wow for someone who’s only had approximately 6hours sleep in the last 120hours that was quite witty if I do say so myself.

Yes someone who’s only had approximately 6hours sleep in the last 120hours would think that :laugh_at:

And only somebody on a multiday phet binge would consider that facetious remark amusing

Awww noooo. My christmas is ruined haha.
December 22, 2012 at 12:14 pm #1264233In fact, surely the amount the brain can hold is infinite, as memories are constantly erased, re written over and improved upon over time (with numerical recall, word recall etc.)
But then again thats an exchange of data since some is being deleted to make way for the new.
But you wouldn’t know you’d lost some, it would be gone forever so i guess it may as well be infinite..December 22, 2012 at 12:18 pm #1264212@Deezl 513242 wrote:

December 22, 2012 at 12:22 pm #1264228The fairy mind mother has a whole universe to store all your memories in, and when you need to remember something she drops it into your head!
December 22, 2012 at 12:24 pm #1264229why do we forget where we’ve put something but?
December 22, 2012 at 12:31 pm #1264234BECAUSE YOUR OLDD!!
Nah seriously its just because sometimes the memory isn’t reinforced into your memory properly and you subconsciously gain more important information so it just removes memories that were never really there anyway. I think.December 22, 2012 at 12:56 pm #1264230December 22, 2012 at 1:39 pm #1264214@The Psyentist 513183 wrote:

u don’t have a hippo to help u sleep?? aw

i saw some doc that said the hippocampus also has a role to erase memory, in which case mine is working very well

Well to be fair you had a senior moment and didn’t even finish your question. You ended it with but?
And the delightful young gentleman still had the decency to provide an answer.

She’s carrying a few spare tyres but I wouldn’t call my girlfriend a hippopotamus.
