A bit of an odd querie here, but a mate has asked me about taking my rig to do a party over at his place, and considered the possiblity of using one of the large greenhouses they have there, (horticultural farm where they live, well used to be, the greenhouse isn’t used anymore) and he says its about the size of a medium warehouse, so say maybe 1000sq ft, i havent seen it, but he’s going to link me photos, my rig is about 3k, and the issue we’ve both brought up is, will the sound break the glass, i’ve done some reading online but I wanted to know from any sound techies on here if anyone has any advice or even if anyone has done something like this before?? obviously don’t really like the idea of lots of shattered glass falling from a great height onto people, and also if any precautions can be taken to disperse the sound in a way it wont put too much stress on the glass.
i’ll look forward to hearing any contributions,
thanks,
Alex

I don’t think you need to worry too much about the sound shattering the glass, but perhaps a bigger concern could be that it might dislodge any loose panels and send them crashing to earth. I’d personally be wary about putting a sound system in a greenhouse if it was loud enough to make the walls and roof rattle (I’m sure most people here have been to a squat party in one of those plastic-sided warehouses and heard the sound of the walls flapping and rattling with the bass).

March 26, 2013 at 1:05 pm #1270077Yeah this doesn’t sound like the best idea. I can just imagine it going wrong and glass smashing peoples on the heads. And as photographthesun said, there would probably be quite alot of rattles and vibrations with then panels. But hey what do i know, i’m no greenhouse expert;)
March 26, 2013 at 1:08 pm #1270076A load of mash up people in a glass house sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.
March 26, 2013 at 2:04 pm #1270073Bad Idea. Even commercial greenhouse frames are pretty flexible, it will rattle like mad with the bass, then panes of glass will start falling on people as the vibrate lose. Assuming a decent rig.
Many years ago I went to a party in a polly tunnel. It was raining sweat all night long the humidity was ridiculous, even in winter. Do they not have a suitable storage barn? -
