Im going to Amsterdam soon, can anyone recommend a good place to get my rave on? Preferably some variety of hardcore. I want to sample the local cuisine haha 😀
September 22, 2013 at 8:30 pm #1275792Everything is awesome there
September 23, 2013 at 9:02 pm #1275787This is true, but some bits are MORE awesome than others…
… if I was to pick just ONE place for a first timer… Melkweg.
Westergasfabriek is apparently more awesome, but I never quite made it there (missed by 100 yards and ended up sleeping outdoors in a blizzard in a park… not easy but I’ve fucked up trying so I’m not about to recommend some else try it).
September 23, 2013 at 10:26 pm #1275783if this is the place I think they’ve made it a bit easier to find and work out what is going on (click on EN and at least some of the site should appear in English). It does appear to have gone a bit more “upmarket” since the 1990s
A while back Robbie4Ever reviewed a trance event in what used to be a “electricity transformer workshop” which (I think) is this place
Transformatorhuis | Westergasfabriek
directions in English are here

Schwarma? It looks like somebody else has already eaten it. In terms of “local” food, you won’t find much Dutch food in Centrum. Try going to a bakery in the Jordaan, you might get something tasty.
Amsterdam is not as bad as London for dodgy fast food, I’ll give it that much credit. Although if you have mayo on your chips, it ain’t always fresh…
Thing is, apart from Indonesian and Surinamse, there isn’t a huge amount of outside cultural influence on the local “cuisine”.
I mean, a lot of Dutch people breakfast on a slice of bread with ham and/or chocolate sprinklies. “Cuisine” is overstating things a bit.

PS: The singers real name is not Maggie but Sjoukje (she Anglicised her stage name to make it easier to pronounce). Though given that she is blonde, very tall and attractive but slightly scary looking she is about as Dutch / North European as you can get.. Her and her husband wrote the song and they had previously been Eurovision entrants in 1974.
The lyrics are actually about the nightlife and how it is always possible to have a good time in Amsterdam 😉

Thanks 🙂
I meant local cuisine as in I wanted to go to a venue with lots of hardcore music (not sex.) 😛

The link for Partyflock agenda is below – be careful as not only are there a lot of mainstream venues / events on there it includes events in areas several KM away from Amsterdam and also other EU countries, and the search function is a bit flaky.
However the raw data is good quality – There is a flag in the first column, NL flag is horizontal stripes of red, white and blue. the last column is the city. Many Amsterdam events contain further links with 3d virtual tours of the venues, and venue sites that contain sections in English (though these may randomly switch back into Dutch, ook both the talen often gemixt are :laugh_at: ). if it you see “uitverkocht” anywhere that means the event has sold out (like most Northern European nations there are rules about max numbers and fire safety, and Dutch people tend to plan their leisure time (including buying tickets and other items) well in advance).

OK, I’ll believe you. Even if nobody else will. 🙂
Schwarma does actually taste OK, if you like chicken grilled in peanut sauce.
November 9, 2013 at 4:22 am #1275794Why don’t you search online for a venue? You will get a list of venues instantly*with their rates and availability.
