I agree with most of the sentiment of this post, but on the introvert thing, I don’t think it’s bad to be introverted. It’s not the same thing as being shy. It’s more to do with spending some time alone whereas extroverts do not enjoy it as much/prefer to do it less often/for less time.

But other than that tbh it’s all about having a good time.

Also extroverts, without meaning to, often come across as brash, competitive and intrusive. This is why on places like public transport networks and crowd events where there is a certain amount of tension over public safety (people do actually get abused and physically attacked by strangers and there are many incidents where a mugger has tried to be “friendly”) folk might come across as “anti social” when they are merely protecting themselves without themselves coming across as wanting to start conflict.

Indeed a lot of night time economy conflicts are caused by extroverted people who are not normally violent or psychotic misreading the signals each other give off or “banter” due to booze/drugs (or competing for the attention of girls etc) and coming to blows. I saw it happen with my own friends many a time over the years and I do not hang around with thugs/hooligans. bear in mind I used to listen to police scanner all the time so was totally desensetised to townies/muppets/footy hooligans fighting but when you see it amongst your own best mates for stupid reasons that has more of a impact.

Britain is no more anti social than any other North European country, if anything we are probably slightly more tolerant of seemingly abnormal/deviant behaviour in public than some other nearby nations. Also as an ex-Londoner I don’t think you can judge the attitudes of an entire country on the culture of just one big city or region or what you see amongst a crowd of 20 something indulging in short term hedonism. My current town (even after some bad incidents) is now a relatively friendly, safe place which people move away from London and the North to live in.

I’ve got loads of real life friends who know of this site and respect it and our music but they don’t have time or inclination to post here because they are slightly older and have many other demands on their time and energy. These days (though I do get involved in music still of course) I only participate in this site myself to share info about science and nature and do some drugs outreach work, and those who know me will know I have always kept the bulk of my private life private (though I have discussed more about it on here than anywhere else). I just prefer to do that, especially as I am older and have a respectable day job and career for an important local business.

In any case I am never going to get involved unlicensed music events again (if people choose to do so its between them and the rest of their community / law enforcement, I will still always help folk deal with the legal issues) because good people (not just coppers or government bods) have told me of the real impact they (and uncontrolled drug use) has on small close knit communitys and I’ve seen it myself over the years – and many friends my age now have teenage children of their own and I feel strongly the only way I can ever justify a fraction of what I got up to in the 80s and 90s is to use what I learned there (good and bad) to keep future generation safe.

So that is always going to affect how I discuss anything on the public internet (I would expect people in their 20s to think different and/or be more focused on simply enjoying themselves for as long as they can which is fair enough).
