LONDON (Reuters) – Gale force winds will coincide with some of the highest tides in over 20 years this weekend, which could cause flooding in coastal areas, particularly in the south and west, the Met Office warned on Friday.
Forecasters said winds may gust up to 60 mph prompting a risk that large waves could breach some coastal defences.
After a calmer period of weather on Saturday, a change in wind direction will pose a particular threat to the southern coasts.
“Flood watches or warning will be issued where appropriate, to give people as much notice as possible,” the Environment Agency’s David Rooke said.“High tides are expected for this weekend, so anyone out near the coast should be aware of any changes in weather conditions,” head of flood defence at the agency said in a statement.
Insurer Lloyds TSB said it was bracing itself for a slew of flood claims and warned householders to take as much preventative measures as possible.
“Thinking ahead and devising a plan to help reduce the risks can help homeowners minimise any potential disruption,” said Gary Hurrys at Lloyds TSB Insurance.
Among its recommendations were:
1 – Move electrical items and upstairs.
2 – If possible roll up carpets and take upstairs.
3 – Remove all easily transferable furniture — rugs, chairs etc above potential flood levels.
4 – Put heavier electrical appliances — such as fridges — on bricks.
5 – Consider parking vehicles in high ground areas.Fri Oct 6, 2006 5:20 PM BST

October 6, 2006 at 5:05 pm #1091690depends on height above sea level and incline of ground up to the property [the closer to the sea and the flatter the ground the more serious the potential problem]

October 6, 2006 at 5:08 pm #1091689nah im alrite the sea will never reach me, but i was just wonderin whether i would be able to watch some narly high waves strike the flood walls.

I´ll be back with that info when I know it….October 7, 2006 at 10:29 am #1091681Hastings is safe from floods apart from the bits right near the sea; there are large flood barriers in London.
The reason why people are now paranoid about floods in Britain is because property developers have built houses on the flood plains, but if you are not staying in these places it should be OK
http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk
has links where you can check for flood risks in any area of Britain..

you are right, why should these nuts be able to party when it seems otherwise impossible to have a rave in your country?
Sorry but after you and angel told me about how the Christians took over the Ungdomshuset and ultimately by their actions sparked off a riot where people were hurt I have lost all tolerance for them.
These sorts of fundamentalists are worse than the Muslim militant terrorists – they are doing everything in a more subtle manner and getting away with it as they work within the “market economy”
October 8, 2006 at 10:19 am #1091694well if they are listening i believe their god is speaking to them now …
