it was behaving strangely when the mixer section is used as a MIDI controller even after cleaning; at the weekend I wondered if I had any spares from a lucky bag of German components I found in Maplin (one of the few decent things in there nowadays); but none of the others were the right dimensions.
So I carefully opened it up, readjusted the wiper; cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol; then a bit of switch cleaner/lubricant and reassembled it; it now works as it should.
its marked as 50K (not sure if its linear or log; I would have expected linear as crossfaders usually are). The PCB markings hint that its used as a simple potential divider connected with the tracks across between 0v and 5V its design is interesting (still not 100% sure how it works; 2 100k tracks in parallel, bridged by the wiper? might explain why if contacts to one track go intermittent the MIDI values would jump about all over the place..)
