😥 😥 😥
I’m off to Thailand in a few weeks! But I have a massive phobia of flying and I have to do it on my own! I meen it’s not enough to stop me going or anything but do worry that I may actualy die on the airoplane of heartfailure! I once got diazapam from the doctor but he gave me such a low dose, something like 0.005mg , he thought the placebo effect would trick me! It did not work! Anyhow, once the plane is actualy up in the air I do relaxe but its just the take of and landing when I have major anxiety attacks! I’m thinking of buying myself a hypnosis cd or something. Anyone else afraid of flying? Any ideas? I just wish I could get on a plane feeling the same as I do when I get on a train or any other mode of transport! A big metal thing flying is just not natural to me! Oh! I’m so scared! (just wish I could click my fingers and be in Thailand though)June 13, 2007 at 9:43 pm #1113240in flight peanuts keep me occupied …

June 14, 2007 at 9:13 am #1113241take an ipod full of your favourite tunes, from orbital to richie hawtin stick it on there and when you get nervous stick on a track …
what else helps …
(this does work)
the next time you are really happy, even if its just stroking your pet or being with family pinch your ear lobe, when you get nervous on the flight just pinch the same ear. when your brain registers the same sensation it releases endorphines and gets rid of immediate stress and calms you down.
its how i get over walking in the dark …

June 14, 2007 at 9:17 am #1113230I’m not in any way frightened of flying but I am concerned over aviation safety particularly as a lot of my extended family are from SE Asia, so my family regularly fly from Heathrow or Stansted to Malaysia and Thailand.
I did a fair bit of research about civil aviation and although you may hear things that may frighten or concern you, by and large it is extremely safe as there is more than one control system; for instance if NATS (air traffic control computer) malfunctions the analogue radios still work and the paper system comes in to effect.
Aircraft are regularly checked and maintained by law, and SE Asian countries are high tech and prosperous these days (they make all our computers and gadgets after all) so the people there know what they are doing when it comes to planes..
Pilots of both Western and Eastern airlines are drug, alcohol and psychologically tested (particularly in the current world climate) and of those who are religious far from being a threat they see it as their duty to their god (whichever ones they worship) to ensure their aircraft and passengers are safe at all time (one of my family friends is a pilot for Malaysia Airlines)
Most of the time worst that can happen is that a flight is delayed or circled or the passengers moved to another aircraft rather than any disaster….
I know its often seen as more a “boys thing” (sorry if that sounds sexist) but ever thought of reading about and leaning as much as you can about planes, air traffic control etc? Sometimes the best way to conquer a fear is to face it (worked for me with fear of spiders, and of being lost in open spaces!)

There’s some travel sickness pills called Stugeron, which are good, obviously you need to check the label to make sure you can take em but . . . they wrap you up in cotton wool (very pleasant), stop the sickies and take the edge off everything else, well worth a shot
An keep your mind on Thailand! Good luck

June 18, 2007 at 8:40 pm #1113233I got my flight booked! Going in three weeks! I followed advice and checked some info on flying! It has put me a little at ease actualy, like knowing the sinking feeling you get during take off is completly normal! And the turbulance thing it said that if you where to put a glass of water on the table during it, it probably woulden’t even spill! Extreme turblance is really rare and even then the plane is made for it! So nothing will happen! Even if I do have a panic attack I won’t die from heart failure!
I did know all of this stuff already, but thats just what my parents said! And as far as i’m concerned what do they know? (thinking about when i’m on an airoplane scared witless) this was written by pilot!
I also have some SUPER STRONG sleeping tablets so I won’t be able to have a drink, but what would I want to drink on my own for apart from wanting to sleep anyway? It makes me feel loads better that no matter what I do I won’t be able to stop myself going to sleep! (which I can never do on a plane coz of adrenaline)
